Consider how the rule of law is highly valued in our society by the general public. When laws are enacted, or a court makes an interpretation of a law, most people accept it as the best course of action. It is also often considered what is right or correct. Laws are thought of as the ultimate determinate of a society’s values, morals, social norms, and expectations.

Also consider the different laws and court interpretations over the last few decades. Compare how the rulings or laws enacted in the 1950s vary greatly from those passed more recently. The language and interpretations of laws themselves have altered as society changes how it perceives race and racism. With more people exploring and challenging typical notions of race and racism through activities such as counterspeech, more new ways of thinking and interacting with each other is unfolding.
