Case 2

Do H + ions readily move across the blood- brain barrier?

Summary Introduction

Case summary:

A woman of age 44 years was found unconscious in the living room by her husband. She was quickly taken to a hospital. The vital signs showed that the blood pressure was slightly high, the heart beat was increased, and the blood sugar levels were also elevated.

Characters in the case:

44 year old woman, her husband, and the physician.

Adequate information:

After giving insulin therapy to the patient, the vital signs came down.

To determine:

Whether the H+ (proton or hydrogen ion) can readily move across an individual’s blood-brain barrier or not.

Blood-brain-barrier is formed by the endothelial cells of the capillary wall. This barrier restricts the movement of some molecules, while it facilitates the movement of other molecules. It is a semipermeable barrier that separates the blood circulating from the extracellular fluid and the brain in the central nervous system.

The blood-brain barrier tends to restrict the movement of solutes and other hydrophilic molecules, which are large in size into the cerebrospinal fluid. It allows the diffusion of hydrophobic molecules, such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, hormones, and other polar molecules...
