Chapter 9, Problem 5SQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

An experiment was conducted which included the cross between the fruit flies leading to the formation of progeny with 77-red eyed males, 71-ruby eyed males and 152 red-eyed females. The gene for the red eye color in drosophila is dominant over the ruby recessive eye color. It is an example of sex linked inheritance in which the alleles of the genes are located at a close distance on the chromosomes. These genes are present on the X-chromosomes and the same traits are passed on to the next generation or the offspring. The Y-chromosome does not exhibit the genes for eye color.

One form of the bleeding disorder known as von Willebrand disease is an autosomal recessive disease. A man who is a carrier marries a woman who is also a carrier of the disease. (a) What percentage of their children are likely to have a disease phenotype? (b) What percentage of their children are likely to have a normal phenotype? (c) What percentage of their children are likely to be carriers of the disease?
In cats, long hair is recessive to short hair. A short-haired male is mated to a long-haired female. a) What are all possible genotypes of these two cats? b) What alleles will the gametes of each of these cats contain in their chromosomes?c) What will the kittens from all possible crosses between these two cats look like?d) Two cats are mated. One of the parent cats is long-haired. The litter which results contains two short-haired and three long-haired kittens. What length fur does the second parent have, and what is its genotype?Cats also have a locus (gene) for a character called agouti. In cats with agouti fur, pigment is unevenly distributed (see Fig. 1). The agouti allele is dominant to the allele for regular fur. A male cat who long haired and is heterozygous for agouti fur is crossed with a female who has regular, non-agouti fur and is homozygous for short fur. a) What are the genotypes of these cats? b) What are all of the possible allelic combinations in the gametes from each…
Albinism, lack of pigmentation in humans, results from an autosomal recessive gene (a).  Two parents with normal pigmentation have an albino child.   (a)  What is the probability that their next child will be albino?  (b)  What is the probability that their next child will be an albino girl? (c)  What is the probability that their next three children will be albino?
