Introduction:

Peripheral chemoreceptors are oxygen sensitive cells that respond to the decreased levels of oxygen in the arterial blood. They are located at the bifurcation of the external and internal carotid arteries. The peripheral chemoreceptors are also known as carotid and aortic bodies. Once activated, the peripheral chemoreceptors cause increased ventilation.
