To review:
The mechanism by which the particular cells belonging to an individual are identified so that the immune response does not act upon the person’s own cells.
Introduction:
Antigens are usually a large protein or polysaccharide molecules. Each antigen has a unique shape, and every bacterium or virus has a different or specific antigen. The immune system produces specific antibodies in response to each uniquely shaped antigen. These antibodies attack and inactivate the antigen and also the bacterium, protozoan or virus carrying it. Most antigens are located on the outer surface of a cell or virus. It is important for the immune system to identify the self and non-self-cells.

- The body’s immune response comprises innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Virulence is the capacity of a pathogen to cause disease BOTH statements are FALSE BOTH statements are TRUE FIRST statement is FALSE; SECOND statement is TRUE FIRST statement is TRUE; SECOND statement is FALSEarrow_forwardClassify immune cells as phagocytes, cytotoxic cells or antigen presenting cellsarrow_forwardAn individual is infected with a particular pathogen that he had before. This results in the generation of an immune response.a) List the name of the type of immune response that may be generated.arrow_forward
- Choose one component of the innate immune system and explain how it is beneficial. This can be part of the 1st line of defense that keeps things out of the body or the 2nd line of defense to help fight pathogens that make it inside the body. Make sure the component you select is from the innate immune system and be sure to explain its purpose.arrow_forwardDescribe the process by which your immune system is able to create antibodies to bacteria which penetrate your skin. Be sure to include ALL cell types and all cell surface antigen/markers involved with this process.arrow_forwardDescribe neutrophils and NK cells, giving one example of how each cell type destroys pathogens that have invaded your body. Why are they both part of the “innate” immune system?arrow_forward
- The correct order of words to describe how innate immune response responds to a pathogen that has gotten by the physical and chemical barriers is: À) Skin, Saliva, Cytokines, Macrophage B)Macrophage, Cytokines, Neutrophil, Natural Killer Cell C) Neutrophil, Cytokines, Killer T Cell, Antibodies D) Antigen, Macrophage, B Cell, Killer T Cellarrow_forwardName several cytokines and describe their role in the immune response.arrow_forwardDescribe how the innate and acquired immune systems work as a unit to protect the body against infection.arrow_forward
- Transfer of immunoglobulins from mother to child during breastfeeding can protect the child from diseases by which type of immunity? Group of answer choices Naturally acquired passive immunity Artificially acquired passive immunity Naturally acquired active immunity Artificially acquired active immunityarrow_forwardThe process where antibody will cause microbes to be connected together so they can no longer cause infection is called: excision inactivation coarctation agglutinationarrow_forwardAn individual is infected with a particular pathogen that he had before. This results in the generation of an immune response.a) List the name of the type of immune response that may be generated. b) Outline and briefly differentiate three characteristics of this type of immune response.arrow_forward
