Vinyl chloride (H2C=CHCl), the starting material used in the industrial preparation of poly (vinyl chloride), is prepared by a two-step process that begins with the reaction of Cl2 with ethylene to yield 1,2-dichloroethane:
(a) Tell whether the reaction is favored by entropy, by enthalpy, by both, or by neither, and then calculate
(b) Tell whether the reaction has an equilibrium temperature between spontaneous and nonspontaneous. If yes, calculate the equilibrium temperature.

- What is the sign of the standard Gibbs free-energy change at low temperatures and at high temperatures for the explosive decomposition of TNT? Use your knowledge of TNT and the chemical equation, particularly the phases, to answer this question. (Thermodynamic data for TNT are not in Appendix G.) 2C7H5N3O6(s) 3N2(g) + 5H2O() + 7C(s) + 7CO(g)arrow_forwardEnthalpy changes often help predict whether or not a process will be spontaneous. What type of reaction is more likely to be spontaneous: an exothermic or an endothermic one? Provide two examples that support your assertion and one counterexample.arrow_forwardFor mercury, the enthalpy of vaporization is 58.51 kJ/mol and the entropy of vaporization is 92.92 J/K mol. What is the normal boiling point of mercury?arrow_forward
- What is the sign of the standard Gibbs free-energy change at low temperatures and at high temperatures for the synthesis of ammonia? 3H2(g) + N2(g) 2NH3(g)arrow_forwardFor each process, predict whether entropy increases or decreases, and explain how you arrived at your prediction. 2 CO2(g) → 2 CO(g) + O2(g) NaCl(s) → NaCl(aq) MgCO3(s) → MgO(s) + CO2(g)arrow_forwardUse the data in Appendix G to calculate the standard entropy change for H2(g) + CuO(s) H2O() + Cu(s)arrow_forward
