Chapter 9, Problem 9.15P
A steel pile (H-section; HP 310 × 125; see Table 12.1a) is driven into a layer of sandstone. The length of the pile is 25 m. Following are the properties of the sandstone: unconfined compression strength = qu(lab) = 80 MN/m2 and angle of friction = 36°. Using a factor of safety of 3, estimate the allowable point load that can be carried by the pile. Use [qu(design) = qu(lab)/5].

The wooden pile shown in the figure has a diameter of 90 mm and is subjected to a load of P = 60 kN. Along the length of the pile and around its perimeter, soil supplies a constant frictional resistance of w = 2.90 kN/m. The length of the pile is L = 5.5 m and its elastic modulus is E = 9.5 GPa.Calculate(a) the force FB needed at the base of the pile for equilibrium.(b) the magnitude of the downward displacement at A relative to B.
Determine the ultimate load capacity of a circular pile with diameter D = 20 cm installed in asaturated soft clay. The pile is embedded 10 m into the ground. According to measurements, thesoil exhibits an undrained shear strength according to the linear relationship: Su = 2+1.6z, wherez is the depth in meters and Su is the undrained shear strength in kPa. The soil's unit weight canbe assumed as 18 kN/m3
The wooden pile shown in the figure has a diameter of 95 mm and is subjected to a load of P = 80 kN. Along the length of the pile and around its perimeter, soil supplies a constant frictional resistance of w = 4.82 kN/m. The length of the pile is L = 4.0 m and its elastic modulus is E = 10.4 GPa.
Calculate
(a) the force FB needed at the base of the pile for equilibrium.
(b) the magnitude of the downward displacement at A relative to B.
