Question
Chapter 9.11, Problem 9.8CIAP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Reason for using hygroscopic material in the transdermal patches has to be identified.
Concept introduction:
- Many medications are more effective if coated or protected with a substance that reacts slowly in the body during digestion, releasing the medication in the appropriate tissue.
- Some early timed-release medications were encased in a
polymer coating that dissolved slowly. - Enteric coatings dissolve in base, so release the medication only after arriving in the intestine.
- Osmotic pumps release medication from a compartment slowly as a second compartment absorbs moisture from air or body fluids.
- Transdermal patches allow a noninvasive method of delivering medications over time.
