Chapter CR, Problem 6E
Lake source cooling Since 2000, Cornell University has used a lake source cooling plant that circulates water from Cayuga Lake through a heat transfer system to chill water for use on campus in refrigeration and air conditioning. Supporters of this method cite reduced carbon emissions and energy costs. Critics fear that higher levels of chlorophyll may damage the ecology of the lake. Cornell monitors the lake at seven test sites near the discharge pipe and at a control site farther away. A report found a statistically significant (at α = 0.05) higher mean chlorophyll level relative to the control site at site #7—one of the monitoring sites.
- a) A long-time critic of lake source cooling is quoted by the Ithaca Journal saying, “The finding shows that the lake source cooling is impacting the … lake.” Which of these comments about this statement is most appropriate?
- i. He’s correct: That’s what a significant finding means.
- ii. He’s wrong: The finding is probably due to chance.
- iii. He’s correct: Comparing to a control site makes this an experiment.
- iv. He’s wrong: This is really an observational study, not an experiment. We can conclude that there is a discernible difference, but we cannot infer a cause.
- v. He’s correct: There are no other plausible explanations, so lake source cooling must be the cause.
- b) Cornell appears to have performed a hypothesis test. What, specifically, was the null hypothesis of this test?
- i. H0: Chlorophyll levels have not changed in the 8 years of lake source cooling.
- ii. H0: μTestSite#7Chlorophyll − μControlSiteChlorophyl=0
- iii. H0: ӯTestSite#7Chlorophyll − ӯControlSiteChlorophyl = 0
- iv. H0: μTestSite#7Chlorophyll = 0
- v. None of the above
- c) The alternative hypothesis of Cornell’s test was most likely
- i. one-sided, testing for higher chlorophyll levels at the test site.
- ii. one-sided, testing for lower chlorophyll levels at the test site.
- iii. two-sided.
- iv. rejected.
- v. irrelevant.
- d) An associate dean of the university is quoted by the Journal pointing out that 28 tests were actually performed and that the one cited by the critic is the only one that showed a statistically significant result. He says, “Scientists expect that pure chance will result in a statistically significant result in every 1 in 20 comparisons.” In proper statistical language, what is the dean implying?
- i. This result may have been a sampling error.
- ii. This result may have been due to response bias.
- iii. This result may have been a Type I error.
- iv. This result may have been a Type II error.
- v. This result may have been a Type III error.
- e) You’ve been called in to consult as a statistics expert. You are asked to comment on whether the hypothesis test is appropriate. What would you like to know or see about the data?
- i. A time plot showing the chlorophyll levels at the site for the past 8 years to check for linearity.
- ii. The
correlation of chlorophyll levels at test site #7 and at the control site. - iii. A histogram of the chlorophyll measurements at test site #7 and at the control site to check for outliers, skewness, or bimodality.
- iv. An independent assessment of the chlorophyll levels performed by New York State environmental officials.
- v. Boxplots of the chlorophyll levels at all seven of the test sites to check that the variation is approximately equal.
- f) An environmental expert has noted that chlorophyll levels are ordinarily quite variable and has questioned whether the effect size of this finding is large enough to be of environmental concern. Statistically, what is he saying?
- i. The observed difference isn’t really significant.
- ii. This was probably a Type I error.
- iii. The test isn’t powerful enough.
- iv. Although the difference is significant, it may not be meaningful.
- v. Although the difference is profound, it may be too subtle.

You are on placement in a GP practice which holds a nurse-led asthma clinic once a week. The nurse practitioner in charge of the clinic tells you that asthma affects around 11% of the Australian population, and results in around 40,000 hospital admissions each year. She also tells you that the common pharmacological treatments can have long-term side effects, so she is keen to promote holistic methods to assist patients in controlling their asthma. You are interested to know whether diet can have an effect on asthma, and decide to find out.

The River is a literary magazine published by the English Department at Tech. It has a 70-year history and enjoys an excellent reputation for providing a literary outlet for aspiring Appalachian writers in particular. However, its sales, mostly through independent bookstores and college libraries, have never been very large. Several years ago, the magazine’s advisory board decided to create a Web site and post the bi-monthly issues online for free access. Due to poor economic conditions and state budget cuts, Tech recently withdrew funding for the magazine, and in order to make up for this financial loss, the magazine’s staff has decided to try to sell advertising (especially to local and regional businesses) on the magazine’s Web site. In order to sell advertising, the magazine’s staff would like to be able to provide potential advertisers with a forecast of the number of “visits” the Web site might receive in future months. Following is the number of monthly visits the Web site has…
The Porsche Club of America sponsors driver education events that provide high-performance driving instruction on actual race tracks. Because safety is a primary consideration at such events, many owners elect to install roll bars in their cars. Deegan Industries manufactures two types of roll bars for Porsches. Model DRB is a heavier roll bar that must be welded to the car’s frame. Model DRB requires 20 pounds of a special high alloy steel, 40 minutes of manufacturing time, and 60 minutes of assembly time. Model DRW requires 25 pounds of the special high alloy steel, 100 minutes of manufacturing time, and 40 minutes of assembly time. Deegan’s steel supplier indicated that at most 40,000 pounds of the high alloy steel will be available next quarter. In addition, Deegan estimates that 2000 hours of manufacturing time and 1600 hours of assembly time will be available next quarter. The profit contributions are $200 per unit for model DRB and $280 per unit for model DRW. The linear…

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardPhysicians Committee for Responsible Medicine The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine tends to oppose the use of meat and dairy products in our diets, and that organization has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding from the Foundation to Support Animal Protection.arrow_forwardPM.346.HSF1 The Practice of Project Management Answer NPV below Background Joseph-McHendry Purveyors, Ltd. Johnson, invented the upward-lifting garage door in 1921 and the electric garage door opener in 1926. Since then OD has been a leading supplier of commercial, industrial, and residential garage doors sold through a nationwide network of more than 450 authorized distributors. They have built a solid reputation as a premier door supplier, commanding 15 % share of the market. Suppose that customers assess door quality first in terms of the ease of operation, followed by its durability. The quality improvement team (QIT) might then assign an engineering team to determine the factors that contribute to these two main problems. Smooth operation of a garage door is a critical quality characteristic that affects both problems: If a door is too heavy, it’s difficult and unsafe to balance and operate; if it’s too light, it tends to buckle and break down frequently or may not close properly.
