Compound $\text{HCN}(aq)$ has to be named.

Concept Introduction:

Binary acids are compounds that contain hydrogen as the first element.

Rules for naming binary acids and oxoacids:

• Root name is kept as such.  Prefix hydro- and suffix -ic acid is added to the element name.
• If the acid is an oxoacid, then the acid from which the polyatomic ion is formed is considered.  Generally, the suffix “-ate” comes from “-ic acids” and suffix “-ite” comes from “-ous acids”

Compound ${\text{BCl}}_{\text{3}}$ has to be named.

Concept Introduction:

Binary molecular compounds are named by using the elements present in it and the number of atoms present in a molecule.

Rules for naming molecular compounds:

• First element name is written as such that is followed by the name of the second element in which the suffix is changed to –ide.
• Greek prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms of each element that is present.  Generally prefix mono- is ignored.
