Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structures of the compounds A, B and C formed in the reaction sequence are to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Meso compounds are stereoisomer with superposable mirror images, that is, they consist of two chiral centers which are mirror images of each other. But, these compounds are optically inactive.
Electrophiles are electron deficient species which has positive or partially positive charge. Lewis acids are electrophiles which accept electron pair.
Nucleophiles are electron rich species which has negative or partially negative charge. Lewis bases are nucleophiles which donate electron pair.
Free radical is an atom, molecule or ion that has unpaired electrons which makes it highly chemically reactive.
Substitution reaction: A reaction in which one of the hydrogen atoms of a hydrocarbon or a
Elimination reaction: A reaction in which two substituent groups are detached and a double bond is formed is called elimination reaction.
Addition reaction: It is the reaction in which unsaturated bonds are converted to saturated molecules by the addition of molecules.
Carbocation is a molecule having a carbon atom bearing three bonds and a positive formal charge.
Carbocation are generally unstable because they do not have eight electrons to satisfy the octet rule.
The order of stability of carbocation is such that the tertiary carbocation is the most stable whereas the primary carbocation is the least stable, and secondary carbocation lies between primary and tertiary carbocations.
If primary carbocation is obtained in product, it rearranges itself to secondary or tertiary carbocation to form more stable product.
If secondary carbocation is obtained in product, it rearranges itself to tertiary carbocation to form more stable product.

- Chemical compound A is an alkene that when treated with ozone followed by treatment of Zn in HOAc produces only (CH3CH2CH2) 2C = O. What is the structure of A? If A is reacted with peroxyacetic acid, what product would be obtained? Write the corresponding structure. Is this substance optically active? Please include a detailed explanation.arrow_forwardA compound with formula C7H12O is treated with sodium borohydride in methanol to yield 2,2-dimethylcylopentanol. Write a reaction scheme showing the structures of the reactant, the reagents, and the product. Will the product be optically active? Explain.arrow_forwardNitromethane is reacted with ethyl prop-2-enoate with EtO-Na+, EtOH 3 equivalents to give the product X(C16). X then reacts with H2/Raney Ni to give the product Y(C14), which in turn reacts with Na to give Z (C12). Indicate which products X, Y and Z are.arrow_forward
- 5. Compound A, C 10H 18O, undergoes reaction with dilute H 2SO 4 at 50 °C to yield a mixture of two alkenes, C 10H 16. The major alkene B, gives only cyclopentanone after ozone treatment followed by reduction with zinc in acetic acid. Which of the following reactions are correct.arrow_forwardCompound A has molecular formula C4H10. Compound A gives two monochlorides, B and C, on photochemical chlorination. Treatment of either of these monochlorides with potassium tert-butoxide gives the same alkene (C4H8) as the product, but B leads to just one isomer of the alkene, D, whereas C gives D and another isomer of the alkene, E. Treatment of monochlorides B and C with aqueous ethanol gives products F and G, respectively, both of which are of molecular formula C4H100. What are the chemical names of compounds A-G?arrow_forwardDetermine a possible structure for an alkene, X, formula C9H14, on the basis of the following information: X adds one mole of hydrogen on catalytic hydrogenation. On treatment with hot basic KMnO4 followed by acidification, X yields the following dicarboxylic acid.arrow_forward
- 4. Compound A has the formula C 8H 8. It reacts rapidly with KMnO 4 to give CO 2 and a carboxylic acid, B (C 7H 6O 2), but reacts with only 1 molar equivalent of H 2 on catalytic hydrogenation over a palladium catalyst. On hydrogenation under conditions that reduce aromatic rings, 4, equivalents of H 2 are taken up and hydrocarbon C (C 8H 16) is produced. What are the structures of A, B, and C.arrow_forwardCompounds A and B are isomers of the molecular formula CyH19Br. Both yield the same alkene Cin an elimination reaction. Hydrogenation of C yields the product 2,3,3,4 tetramethyl pentane. What are the structures of A, B, and C?arrow_forward1,3-Cyclohexadiene the monoepoxide and sodium acetate as the major products: cis + reacts with peroxyacetic acid in the presence of sodium carbonate, giving racemic trans Na₂CO3 H3C OOH CH₂Cl₂, 0 °C 75% yield Select all terms that describe the monoepoxide (which has a cis-cyclic alkene): + H3C ONa+ (۵۰) <10% yieldarrow_forward
- Compound X (structure shown below) has a molecular formula C5H1o and reacts with H2/Pt to give compound Y, C5H12. What is the name of the reaction involved to produce Compound Y? Why is the major product formed by cleavage of the stronger 1° C–H bond?arrow_forwardAn achiral hydrocarbon A of molecular formula C7H12 reacts with two equivalents of H2 in the presence of Pd-C to form CH3CH2CH2CH2CH(CH3)2. One oxidative cleavage product formed by the treatment of A with O3 is CH3COOH. Reaction of A with H2 and Lindlar catalyst forms B, and reaction of A with Na, NH3 forms C.
