Chapter U6.3, Problem 6E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation :

The equilibrium condition needs to be explained by taking example of couples dancing at a prom versus sitting and talking.

Concept Introduction :

An equilibrium is a state of a physical or chemical change when the forward and backward reaction is taking place at same speed.

Explanation of Solution

Some couples are dancing and some are sitting and talking. Both these processes are taking place simultaneously. Those who are talking can participate in dancing and who are dancing now can sit and start talking. Thus the process is dynamic like equilibrium in which the reaction continues in same speed where apparently it seems that reaction has stopped. But that is not the case. As the rate of forward reaction and backward reaction is taking place in same rate so there is no visible change in concentration of any reactant or product.
