the Ted Talk -
Empathy Through Storytelling
Though Salma Abdelrahman’s Ted talk , she captures the power of storytelling and
utilizes it to create positive change.I learned the phrase “ Fabula Rasa” which means that
humans are born with a blank slate, that will continue to develop as we grow older. Until
people are exposed to individuals who have been victims of discrimination, the issue is
hardly real . In order to move people to action to protect the rights of minority groups,
you have to allow them to share their stories. The issues we hear about on our television
are served as constant reminders
, that are affecting the lives of people everywhere.
Storytelling can unify individuals by showing us that no matter our race , religion,
gender, or sexuality we are all human . They can infuse a sense of compassion, caring ,
love , and empathy in our hearts. Storytelling can show marginalized people that they
are not alone , and there are people who care for them , support them, and are willing
to fight for there respect.Without empathy, you will never fully understand another's
story
. Without that understanding, forming a connection would be nearly impossible.
Listening is the most important part of this process of sharing, but what you do after you
listen to a story is just as important. Most importantly I learned that injustice anywhere
is a threat to justice everywhere.
o
Whose story do you want to share?
I would like to focus on the racism and discrimination against
African American women. I plan to share the story of former
First
Lady Michelle Obama and her experiences being the first black
woman in the White House . Michelle Obama
has recalled an “
exhausting “ amount of racism during Barack Obama presidency.
She has experience actions from being disrespected , ignored,
mocked, and even felt
unnoticed .
Why is this the story you want to share with your
classmates?
I believe the story of Michelle Obama is important to be shared to
show how horrible society is in reality . Hearing the stories about
stereotypes can help make a change in our behavior .
I want to
spread awareness to the challenges African Americans are facing on
a daily , most importantly I want to spread awareness on the
disadvantages of being a black women in a white mans world .
o
Is there a single story/stereotype impacting this person
that you are interested in exploring for your story?
Michelle Obama faced stereotypical situations declaring that she was an
“angry
black women “. Michelle Obama feared
racial misperceptions due to her
ethnicity like being “ ghetto “ or undisciplined and uneducated.
For centuries,
black women have been shoehorned into a handful of stereotypes, the mammy,
the sexual siren, the welfare queen, the matriarch, and the angry Black woman.
o
What social determinants of health are you interested in
exploring for your story?
The social determinants of health that I am interested in
exploring for my story would be
racism , discrimination, and
violence.I want to explore the relationships and differences
between different race groups and the inequities that people are
challenging. I am interested in focusing on the social and
community context between characteristics within the lives of
people that dictate how they are labeled .
