What is the value of studying the humanities in a business or technical curriculum? How
might a topic such as ancient art enhance contemporary life?
First of all, when I think of the Humanities I can say it contains a study of society around
the world and critical thinking, reasons behind everything. I can also think about ancient
and modern architecture’s use of different elements in that and also advancement in
technology. I can say that the Humanities covers a lot of areas but I like the subject of
humanities as an art form because that gives ideas regarding revolutions and shows the
process of change throughout the years. Well to talk about the value of Humanities in
business and technical curriculum, as humanities is when a person learns to think
critically and creatively it gives insight to be able to gain new knowledge and experience
in business and technical program. “Our world is enriched when coders and marketers
dazzle us with smartphones and tablets, but, by themselves they are just slabs. It is the
music, essay, entertainment and provocations that they access, spawned by
humanities, that animate them-and us” (Kristof, 2014). As we all know things change
day by day it is important to have that insight to gain knowledge. Overall, I can say that
humanities is study of culture, tradition, history, philosophy and religious through arts.

Choose a work of art from the reading in Chapter 1. Discuss how the work is a reflection
of the ancient culture that created it. Also, did anything particularly surprise or impress
you about the work of art or the ancient people who created it?
First of all, while reading chapter one the work of art that most interesting is Fig 1.13
“The Ziggurat at Ur (modern Muqaiyir, Iraq)”. And the most interesting thing that surprise
me is how is it possible for a culture to build something like this during that time. I think
that during that time it was not easy for particular culture or religion to unite together.
Not only that it also takes lot of man power and money to build structure like this so yes
it is surprising for me. The Ziggurat at Ur discovered in 1927 by British Archeologist, C.
Leonard Woolley Served as a pathway between Earth and Heaven to the Gods. “
The
Great Ziggurat of Ur was dedicated to the moon god Nanna, who was the patron deity
of the city. As the Mesopotamian gods were commonly linked to the eastern mountains,
the ziggurat may have functioned as a representation of their homes. Thus, the people
of Ur believed that their ziggurat was the place on earth where Nanna chose to dwell”
(DHWTY, 2014).
This is most distinctive architectural invention of the Ancient near East.
Like an ancient Egyptian pyramid an ancient Near Eastern ziggurat had four sides and
rises up to realm of the gods. however unlike the Egyptian pyramids the exterior of the
Ziggurat were not smooth but tiered to accommodate the work which took place at the
structure as well as the administrative oversight and religious rituals essential to Ancient
Near Eastern cities. We can say that Ziggurat are found scattered around what is today
