Bio 152 | Spring 2024 Water Quality 3: Pre-Lab Questions __________________________________________________________________________________________ Be sure to read all the instructions and related resources before responding to the prompts below. This assignment is worth 4 points. 1. Read through the webpage linked below and explore the data they provide. This site was developed by the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission which monitors water quality in the greater Madison area surface and ground waters. 2. Here is the webpage: https://www.carpcwaterqualityplan.org/surface-water/monitoring/chloride/ 3. After reading the webpage, answer these questions: a. What are the two primary ways in which chloride enters our lakes and other freshwater systems? i. Chloride enters through the road salt applied for winter maintenance and runs off into surrounding soil and waterways. Another way is through water softeners in households, which enter wastewaters or septic systems. a. Why is too much chloride a problem in our freshwater ecosystems? i. High chloride can become toxic to wildlife, and even be lethal. a. In your own words, summarize the observed trends in road salt use and the impact on surface waters. You should describe this in 2-3 sentences. i. The trend in road salt use has greatly increased since the 1960, but it doesn’t have a linear relationship throughout the years. The impact on surface water shows that chloride levels are way higher during the winter than summer, but summer concentrations have also been increasing throughout time, therefore the winter chloride levels have year round effects. a. What can individuals do to reduce the amount of chloride entering our waterways? Describe 2-3 actions. i. Some things you can do to reduce chloride levels include using your salt during the winter wisely, meaning don’t use too much and only when needed. Another way is to make sure your water softener doesn’t use too much salt, and you can do this by taking a quiz online, or contacting a professional. Lastly, you can be a safe driver and stay off the roads when it's snowing so the roads can be cleaned easier and faster, and then spread the word about all these ways to reduce chloride.
