2 Are Happy Workers More Productive? The past couple of chapters have discussed personality, self-esteem, happiness in the workplace, and how it affects productivity in the workplace. Workplace productivity is defined as how much work is completed in a particular work environment over time. Research shows happiness is subjected differently to each employee. Something like benefits and safety might make one employee whereas, money and benefits make another employee happy. Happy workers are more productive during a job the challenge is keeping employees happy. I have work experience where I was very unhappy as an employee. I was not productive at that job. I did the bare minimum of what I had to do every day to get my paycheck and go home. I felt like I was overworked and underpaid, so I did the amount of work that I thought was worth how little I was being paid. This happens at a lot of workplaces, if employees are paid correctly for the amount of work, they are completing, why would they do things for the workplace to be productive? This is not the correct way to behave in a workplace, although it is normal to see this happen when a worker is unhappy with the workplace. Happiness seems to motivate greater effort, increasing output without affecting its quality and thus boosting productivity. Both a temporary increase in happiness and long-term changes in baseline happiness are associated with greater productivity. Because most of the evidence is based on correlations or on laboratory studies, more research is needed for definitive guidance; still, the available evidence suggests that companies can be encouraged to introduce policies to increase employee happiness.” (Proto, 2016). According to the research found in this study, happiness creates better productivity even if the happiness is for a short time. This article explains how a lot of the research was completed in laboratory settings so more defined research
