Revision Recommendations for Community Guidelines
Dear Ms. Porcaro and Mr. Shadeev
I hope this memo finds you well. After understanding the recent events and how certain of our policies could go a long way in providing a more accurate direction. I have completed your task of comprehensively reviewing the Community Guidelines document at Google. After a thorough
review I have compiled some strategic revision and recommendations that will enhance the clarity, and usability of this document. I have adhered to the guidelines in the code of conduct as well throughout this process.
Overview of Current Community Guidelines:
Google’s Community Guidelines are crucial in nurturing a conducive environment for open-
ended discussion and ensuring the integrity of our goods and services. Therefore, it is important that we grow with the current trend of working, with emphasis on the current impact of remote working and virtual collaborations.
Revisions:
Clarify Scope (Introduction):
The introduction could explicitly define the "workplace." Given the increase of hybrid employees, the revised introduction should state that these guidelines apply universally, whether employees are in a physical office or working remotely. Since our team members represent us wherever they are this clarification will help all employees better understand the guidelines' applicability.
Expand on Google Values (Point 1):
The guidelines start of strong with stating things to remember during communication. By reminding team members of certain things they should not do during communication, especially with remote work, would go a long way of including all members. In addition, it is beneficial to provide specific examples or scenarios that illustrate how
these values manifest in daily interactions. This added context will help employees better grasp how to apply these values in practice.
Strengthen Data Security Language (Point 5):
Point 5 expresses how communication should be shared. However, by rephrasing it to emphasize the critical importance of data security and confidentiality, the accountability section can be included. The revised section would include explicit guidance on handling sensitive information, and how to navigate to avoid data breaches. This would ensure that all employees are aware of their data safeguarding responsibilities.
Include Reporting Channels (Introduction):
It would be vital to place information about reporting violations or concerns regarding the guidelines at the forefront of the document. This includes clear contact information for Ethics & Business Integrity, Human Resources, and the Alphabet Helpline. By highlighting these reporting channels, we reinforce our commitment to accountability and encourage employees to report issues without fear of retaliation.
Modifications:
In reference to the prevalence of remote and hybrid work, I recommend the creation of a new section within the Community Guidelines that addresses remote work etiquette and guidelines

for virtual meetings. This section can provide practical guidance on maintaining professionalism,
productivity, and inclusivity in virtual work settings. Inclusion of this information will demonstrate our adaptability to changing work dynamics.
Design Enhancements:
To improve usability, I propose design enhancements such as a table of contents, headers, and sub-headers. These formatting elements will make the document more accessible and user-
friendly, allowing employees to quickly find the information they need.
In conclusion, these recommendations aim to enhance the clarity, and accuracy of our Community Guidelines, and ensure that they remain relevant in an evolving work culture. I believe that implementing these changes will contribute to a more inclusive workplace and reduce anu ambiguity. Thank you for considering these revision and recommendations. I look forward to discussing them further. Sincerely,
Anon
