The purpose of this memo is to request assistance from all staff members of Madeup Law Firm to properly plan and prepare a new operational budget. In preparation for the upcoming fiscal year, the budget for Madeup Law Firm will need to be created, analyzed, and approved. This budget will cover our firm’s projected expenses between 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2024. To ensure the office has the most accurate operational budget, we must collectively evaluate the needs of our team and submit proposed incorporations. What resources would our office benefit from? Each team member’s proposal will be due by 15 September 2023. To assist you with your proposal, attached to this memo is this fiscal year’s operational budget, and below is a list of areas for consideration. Bill Lewis, manager of the Thomas Electronics Division, called a meeting with his controller, Brindon Peterson, and his marketing manager, Patty Fritz. The following is a transcript of the conversation that took place during the meeting:
Bill: Brindon, the variable costing system that you developed has proved to be a big plus for our division. Our success in winning bids has increased, and as a result our revenues have increased by 25%. However, if we intend to meet this year’s profit targets, we are going to need something extra—am I right, Patty?
Patty: Absolutely. While we have been able to win more bids, we still are losing too many, particularly to our major competitor, Kilborn Electronics. If we knew more about their bidding strategy, we could be more successful at competing with them.
Brindon: Would knowing their variable costs help?
Patty: Certainly. It would give me their minimum price. With that knowledge, I’m sure that we could find a way to beat them on several jobs,…

Background Information:
Midge Watson had been working in the Bookkeeping Department of the Best Fits Sporting Goods Manufacturing Company for the four years since she graduated from high school. She was bright, attractive, and popular, and had done well in the company, as her recent promotion to senior Bookkeeper proved. One of her new job responsibilities required Midge to go to the warehouse once a week to check on and verify various inventory and shipment information. This meant that she often worked for three or four hours at a time in the Shipping Office.
In order to reduce the noise from the operations around it, the office was completely walled in. On these trips to Shipping, Midge worked closely with the shipping clerk, Susan Adams. Susan, a veteran employee of ten years with Best Fit, was divorced. Susan maintained all the shipping and inventory information as it was processed. Since Midge had never before worked in an actual manufacturing and warehouse…

The MGMT Insurance Ltd. accepts payments on various insurance policies from employees of businesses across the island. These businesses deduct payments from employees’ salaries and pay the insurance company a lump sum each month. This total amount deducted is shown on each employee’s payslip. Deductions are due at the end of each month and each participating business submits one payment for its employees to the insurance company via online payments through the bank. However, if payments were received after 11:00 a.m., the bank does not process them until the next business day. At the beginning of each month an administrative assistant at MGMT Insurance Ltd. downloads the deductions for each company and allocates payments to the various policies. These payments include the client’s unique number along with his/her relevant policy numbers and amounts due.…

FACTS:
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jonadel Corporation has proposed that all managerial positions be included in the corporate job evaluation program. The idea came from several friends in other companies of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries where he is a member of the Board of Directors. The inclusion of managerial positions in other company’s job evaluation programs has been found successful and helpful. There are differences in the pay systems based on the job evaluation in these companies where the chairman is and has the greatest shares of stocks.
In one of the special meetings of the Board of Directors, he proposed the idea to the Chief Operating Officer. The Chief Operating Officer said that the programs be held in abeyance until he had consulted his line and operating managers who will be affected by the changes due to the job evaluation system that will be implemented.
In the meeting called by the Chief Operating Officer, most of the managers opposed the…
