ELN – Analytical Technique Simple Distillation Simple Distillation Purpose Demonstrate methods for the purification of volatile compounds. Notes - The higher the temperature the faster it collects - The 3rd fraction was collected at a lower temperature. Protocol Sample Preparation Get assigned a certain mixture. Collect 3.5 mL of the assigned mixture into the conical vial. Assembly of the Apparatus Before assembly put a mixing bar into the conical vial with the mixture. 1
ELN – Analytical Technique Simple Distillation Assembly includes a 5 mL conical vial, distillation head, air condenser, and a thermocouple. (Grease the glass joints before assembling the glassware.) Clamp the apparatus in the middle of the mini-hood area Put 2 tile plates on top of the heating mantle. Adjust the apparatus so that the vial is lowered through the hole in the heating mantle. Put the thermocouple so the tip is in the neck of the distillation head just below the well. **IMPORTANT** Plug the heating mantle cord into the variac transformer and not directly into the plug. Fraction Collection To begin Distillation, set the power of the variac to 40. If nothing is collected after 20 minutes, turn the setting up to 45. Collect 3 fractions of the distilled liquid. Record the temperature range from the beginning of the collection until enough of the liquid has been collected. When a reasonable amount has been collected, remove the cork from the sidearm and use a Pasteur pipet to transfer the liquid from the collection to the Teflon-capped vial. After collecting the 3rd fraction into the 3rd vial, turn the transformer off, remove the heating mantle, and allow the assembly to cool. The remaining liquid should be collected into the 4th vial. Waste Dispose of all organic material in the appropriate waste container. DO NOT wash the vials and glassware 2
