NCSSM Civil and Environmental Engineering Task: A map of part NCSSM Campus is shown below. A cistern is planned at the location designated by red oval to collect the runoff from the region outlined below. We will need to collect some on-site information about the ground cover in this region in order to consider the potential water amount and quality in the cistern. Data: Elevation at highest point: 412 feet Elevation at lowest point near cistern: 398 feet Length of catchment area: 370 feet Width of catchment area: 110 feet Our first task will be to approximate a Curve Number for the area in question, which is a parameter representing whether the water will tend to runoff of the surface (high CN) or tend to infiltrate and be stored as groundwater (low CN). Label the eight categories in the curve number table below and then divide the maps on the next two pages into regions corresponding with each category.
