COM 500 Communication Models Activity Worksheet
Prompt: While there are many different communication models, theories, and concepts available today, the most easily recognized are these four basic communication models: action, interaction, transactional, and convergence, which are all described in the Communication Models Infographic
. Think
about the different types of communication that you experience in your day-to-day activities. Do you see
each of these models in your everyday experiences? For each model, describe one or two examples of the model in action in a person’s everyday activities, and explain why each example matches the selected model. See the Communication Models Activity Guidelines and Rubric document for more details on grading and submission.

Action Model
At my daughter’s first softball game of the year, her coach gave a motivational speech to get the team pumped up before sending them out
onto the field. The girls yelled in excitement and ran out of the dugout, ready to start the game.
The action model is seen in this scenario because the coach directed his
message to the team directly, without an opening for the team to ask questions. He assumed that the team was listening to and able to interpret his message.

Action Model
On the way to work in the morning listening to the local radio and the traffic segment comes on, in this segment you find out that the route you normally take is backed up due to an accident but there is another way to go so you are still able to get to work on time.
The action model is seen in this scenario because it was a general traffic
message that was directed to the target
audience who was listening to the local radio station and there was no need way to ask questions. The radio station was the one tracking the traffic patterns
and letting the listeners know when there was an issue or when it was clear.
Interaction Model
You find something you want to buy on Facebook marketplace, and you send a message to the sender about the product. The back and forth for a
few days until you decide on a good time and place for both of you to meet to exchange the product at hand.
You and your friend want to make plans to meet up for dinner soon, you both text back and forth to figure out what day, time, and place would work both for you.
Both scenarios are interaction model because they both are a back and forth,
so it is communication that is taking place over time and there is a clear outcome at the end. It also allows the receiver to comprehend the message and come up with a clear response before answering.
Transactional Model
At work your leader comes up to you
and says that they need to talk to you one on one, you go into their office to have the conversation and it turns more into a longer discussion than either of you had planned for but it was one with lots of back and forth on how the team works together and how you have ideas for how to make things better on the team.
This is an example of transactional model in communication because it is happening in person and there is room to see expression let it be facial, body, or even verbal in the tone that the message is being received. Convergence Model
A new system is in place at work, and it has many different aspects from the old system that was used. The leadership decides to send out an email on the new process of how things must be done. One of your coworkers comes up to you to talk about the changes and how they are
not a fan of the way things must be done because it is not how it use to be, you are a newer worker and like the new system. You both go back and forth giving your opinions and, This is an example of the convergence model because there is no clear line of the back and forth it is going round and round until the mutual understanding is
found to report back to the leader at the end of the conversation.
