Hello Class, I have really enjoyed learning new methods and philosophies, as well as reading about various leadership and communication skills during this term. In this course, I was able to compare myself to various leaders I have encountered as an employee throughout my career, from entry-level to upper management. Before starting this course, I felt a bit nervous about the video journaling and unsure of how well I would do filming myself. I was also unsure if my responses would be as articulate as if I could sit and write them out, giving me an opportunity to revise and edit as necessary. However, this course has pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to try new activities in which I lacked confidence. I am content with how I progressed in this class, and I completed the course without any real setbacks. As a leader, I have come to realize that I can only influence how I respond to and deal with changes as they happen around me. Even though we can plan for specific predicted changes, we can only see or forecast many changes until they are present. But, leaders can decide to make the most significant decisions for a successful end or try to stop changes by planning how they will respond and adapt as they happen. We may choose to be happy and accept changes, or we can be resentful and critical of them. The VUCA environment is not going away any time soon. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution advances, it will only continue to get more volatile and unpredictable. The world is changing so quickly that predicting changes or market shifts is all but obsolete. The more adeptly we, as leaders, can manage unexpected change, the better off we will be. I have staff who possess knowledge and are willing to get their hands dirty and construct things that technology cannot. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to compete with
technology as it continues to solve many workplace problems. When we went into lockdown three years ago, and the employment market slowly reopened, the most recent societal change was still in progress. Since then, things have changed, some for the better and some for the worse, but permanent changes have been made. For instance, technology allows employees to telework more effectively and efficiently. When COVID-19 first made headlines, we witnessed a fast development of change that occurred overnight. The most valuable skill I could acquire or contribute to my leadership is learning how to effectively encourage others instead of just "expecting the numbers" or "goals" to be achieved. To ensure that I have the skills to manage any employee effectively and efficiently under any situation, future courses in the MBA program will benefit from my strong foundation in effective leadership and communication. This will help me and my team members, as leaders, to be more effective and productive, reach organizational goals faster, and foresee any upcoming changes or obstacles in the VUCA world we are leading today.
