Strategic alternatives are long-term plans that businesses develop to set their direction. When setting the organizational direction, the human and organizational resource availability will be considered, and the goals will be set based on the resource availability. Directional strategies are a framework used by an organization to develop the organization’s mission, vision, and goals. For example, Huntington has issues with its revenue cycle and restructuring its AR days which was 64 days, it was too high for the hospital location, payer mix, etc. There was a need for restructuring hence Jim hired Kim who had great knowledge to implement changes to decrease the AR days change morale, get to know employees, and change the lack of communication among them. Huntington’s mission and vision is “providing patient-centered, compassionate care, and being a leader in creating community well-being through world-class health care delivered with kindness
and dignity.” The directional strategies are stated in the mission and vision statement which they have managed to maintain consistently. In 2012 it was named among the top performing hospitals in U.S. News and World Report. In 2022-2023 they were awarded by U.S News as one of the top best performing hospitals in COPD, prostate cancer surgery, gastroenterology and
urology, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery. Kim Markey was hired because there was a need for change in the business process, low morale among employees, lack of communication, and lack of trust. All these mentioned above contribute to the failure of the business process. Kim Markey understands the need for strategic alternatives to change the direction. The current actions among employees do not align with the mission and vision of the organization. “Respect, Integrity, Stewardship, Excellence, and Collaboration” are values Huntington is also known for. (
https://www.huntingtonhealth.org/about-us/
) After the arrival of the consultants, the team was worried about their jobs but quickly realized that they were there and accepted the change that was needed in the organization. However, the consultants took notice of the lack of communication among the Medicare team which can affect the new process being successful. Kim Markey's directional and strategic alternatives are to change the culture among the employees in the business office and improve the business process.
In doing so, there will be an overall improvement in the department and organization.

Budget Surplus Case Study
A small midwestern city has a $1 million budget surplus. Two groups imme- diately begin vying for the funds. One of the requests comes from down- town businesses requesting to use the money to beautify downtown by adding brick sidewalks and planting areas with the goal of attracting cus- tomers. As city manager, you are aware that the downtown area has not been doing as well as predicted and that the small businesses are necessary for the development of a "vibrant downtown" as stated in the city's goals. The other request comes from the city's police department wanting to begin a unit to pursue "career criminals." You are familiar with the statistics and know that repeat offenders commit an overwhelming number of crimes. There is an apparent trend in police departments to address this issue separately.
The two groups are competing for limited resources. Both causes are considered worthy of city funding, but…

But that meant first finding the students who needed

drop out of the Hamilton County school system. At the

teacher or counselor with whom students have a direct

XFashion has explored other segments to expand the business, such as luxury, children’s and man’s fashion. The company has decided to postpone targeting the luxury segment, because, according to Julia Bernstein, Chief Operating Officer of XFashion, “the segment proves not to be ideal”. Conversely, the company will launch XFashion Men in December, by adding men’s apparel and accessories in response to strong client demand. “Since day one, we’ve heard from XFashion husbands, boyfriends, brothers and dads that they would love a XFashion service for themselves,” said Bernstein.
In addition to style services that directly compete with XFashion, such as Nordstrom’s Trunk Box, the men’s apparel segment is also targeted by other competitors. Some offer only a specific item, such as the Tie Subscription Club or the Socks Society, in which customers pay a $45 monthly fee to receive 6 new pairs of socks every three months. Case Analysis (The Resource-Based View in Sports)
Strategy and sports met in the movie Moneyball. The Oakland Athletics applied statistical analysis to the evaluation of players and surged in performance. The team’s analysis method, called sabermetrics, was unique in how it applied objective data to predict future player performance. The Athletics were able to recruit players at a lower cost due to their proprietary knowledge. Even after competitors started using statistical analysis, the Athletics benefited from their early knowledge, capable staff, and history of decision-making. All of this, of course, translated into profit for the team owners.
Competitive advantage comes from unlikely places in other sports as well. Researchers found that NCAA football programs benefit from staff diversity. Racial diversity among coaches and varied past experiences predict success. NBA basketball teams are more successful as they gain shared experiences. After years together on a team, just like…
