Part 2 | Conscious Marketing Textbook
What is the difference between corporate social responsibility and
conscious marketing? (Textbook learning outcome 4.2)
What is corporate social responsibility?
The internal decisions made by a company to be following environmental, social, and ethical
standards. Although it is not against the law to not be responsible of these things, it is heavily
encouraged. The Textbook mentions that BMW was engaging is CSR when they made their
Children Safety Program.
What is conscious marketing?
Marketing in a way that is clear that the goal isn’t just profits. Conscious marketing entails
marketing without forgetting about the ethical affect your decisions make on the environment,
shareholders, or employees. For example, “The Container Store” was mentioned in the textbook
for being very cognizant of their marketing decisions and all decisions which is why it made it on
the Forbes list for best companies to work for.
Provide three differences between corporate social responsibility and conscious
marketing.
Conscious Marketing is more specific to the marketing sense whereas CSR is more general
about how a company goes about contributing to social, environmental, and ethical areas.
CSR is more of a commitment than conscious marketing. Conscious marketing is more of a
choice at the time, to communicate with customers using their Marketing.
CSR can be happening behind the scenes whereas conscious marketing is direct
communication to the world about what they are doing.

Part 2 | Greenwashing Video
Why Do Companies Need to Greenwash?
Please provide a 2 to 3 sentence reaction to the following thesis statements from the video.
Also, please select your own thought provoking statement from the video.
“Greenwashing changes the narrative of what change and climate action means.”
It’s crazy to think that companies can make us think that buying their product can produce a
positive change on the planet. Even though, us buying their products is a big reason why the
problems exist in the first place.
“Greenwashing lulls us into a false sense of security”
The advertisements that many companies are putting out, makes us think they have the world
climate on their minds and that they are going to fix the problems. In reality, they are harming
the earth more than they are helping and we need to be cognizant of it.
“There are no ethical corporations under capitalism”
Capitalism rewards people for putting profit first and other things secondary. Companies have
no reason to focus on the environment when they are making more money strictly going after
profit.
“Profit above all else”
This just goes to show how easy the public gets tricked by advertisements from companies. The
main motivation behind many big businesses is strictly the money they make, regardless of the
drawbacks.

Ethical Dilemma When Algorithms Discriminate
Promising companies the ability to get to know their customers and maximize the benefit gained from each one, CRM systems could be called a
marketer's dream. CRM software allows companies to look closely at customer behavior, drilling down to smaller and smaller market segments.
Once so segmented, customers can be targeted with specific promotions. For the company, this process reaps the greatest returns from
marketing efforts because only those customers are targeted who are likely to respond to the marketing campaign.
From a customer's perspective, CRM systems seem like a great idea. You finally stop receiving advertisements for things that don't interest you.
But what if a company uses its CRM software in a more discriminating way? Where do companies draw the line between using CRM data to
offer certain clients customized deals and unethically discriminating against other customers? For example, lenders, which often segment their…
