Study Guide for Week 2 Quiz Prepared by Frances Stehle If you study these theories and terms, you should be prepared for the quiz. The quiz is only 10 questions, so not all of these will be tested, but the questions are derived from these theories and terms. It is very helpful to understand the main theories well enough to apply them. Here is a helpful CrashCourse video (about 9 minutes) that covers the three major theories if you are interested: https://youtu.be/DbTt_ySTjaY While these Week 2 quiz questions are mostly testing key terms over theory, it is helpful to understand the basic tenets of these theories (Coverage begins in Chapter 1 and discussed in subsequent chapters and is also discussed in the Week 1 Lesson): Structural Functionalist Conflict Symbolic Interactionist (review this theory in general, as a sociological theory (Chapter 1), but also in the chapter on socialization where George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley’s ideas and terms are discussed. Understand the terms.) Sociobiology (Chapter 3 of textbook) Week 1 content (Week 1 Lesson and Chapter 1) Seeing the strange in the familiar (Week 1 Lesson) Seeing the general in the particular (Week 1 Lesson) Week 2 content (Week 2 Lesson and Chapters 2, 3 and 4) Culture (The Week 2 Lesson does a nice job discussing these as well as Chapter 2): discovery innovation diffusion norms folkways
mores cultural lag cultural relativism ethnocentrism cultural universals Chapter 3: Jean Piaget’s cognitive develo pmental stages- know them all voluntary resocialization total institution Chapter 4: impression management Erving Goffman Role conflict Role strain Role ambiguity Role exit
