Briefly describe what the Poisson's ratio represents or tells us. The Poisson’s ratio represents the change in lateral or transverse dimensions of a material when it undergoes axial deformation and quantifies the ratio of the lateral strain (change in dimensions perpendicular to the direction of deformation) to the axial strain (change in the direction of deformation) - Poisson's ratio value typically falls between 0 and 0.5, where 0.5 corresponds to an incompressible material (does not change in volume during deformation) What principle is critical for deriving 3-D Hooke's law from 1-D Hooke's law? The critical principle is the assumption of linear elasticity, which states that when a material is subjected to small deformations, the stress-strain relationship remains linear and can be described by a set of linear equations. In the context of Hooke's law, this means that stress and strain are directly proportional within the elastic range, regardless of the direction of deformation. What assumptions are made to derive the version of 3-D Hooke's law presented in the course notes? 1. Homogeneous: material properties are independent of location 2. Isotropic: material properties are independent of direction 3. Infinitesimal strain: behavior applies only to small deformations or strains What was the most interesting thing you learned in this week's pre-class materials? One interesting aspect about the Poisson's ratio is that it is largely independent of the material's elastic modulus (Young's modulus). This means that materials with very different elastic modulus values can have very similar Poisson's ratios, and vice versa. What was the most confusing part of this week's pre-class content? The most confusing part of this week’s pre-class content is decomposing stress in three dimensions.
