Case Study Details: Assessment, Planning, and Interventions 1. What are the relevant facts (who is the case about i.e., age, gender, race, ethnicity, gender orientation, environment and so on)? Mr. Morgan- Male, husband, father Mrs. Morgan- Female, mother, and wife Emma- 13-year-old. Female, oldest child Ryan- 10-year-old, Male, middle child, Molly- 3-year-old, female, youngest child 2. What information is missing (what would you need to improve understanding and analysis of the case)? The family race and ethnicity are missing. The ages of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Whether Emma attends school Employment status of Mr. Morgan Who the illegal drugs belong to Possible drug usage 3. Given the facts, how would you define the problem(s) Mr. Morgan is physically abusive towards his wife and son, Ryan. He has problems with substance abuse (drugs and alcohol). Mr. and Mrs. Morgan both are neglectful to the children by leaving them home alone occasionally without food. The children’s exposure to illegal drugs. Emma’s role as caretaker for her siblings. 4. Given you definition, how would you respond as a social worker (tell how you would engage this kind of client). As, a social worker, I would approach the family as a group with empathy and kindness. I would address my questions to Mr. Morgan and earn his trust and reassure him, that I am there to assist him and his family and not cause harm. 5. What is your hunch about the client? Any diagnosis? (assessment) Mr. Morgan: Substance Use Disorder (drinking is excessive and causes distress and harm), depression, etc. Mrs. Morgan: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; Battered Women Syndrome (denial of abuse), low self-esteem. Emma: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (witnessing the abuse, direct exposure to the abuse). Ryan: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; Developmental trauma disorder (direct exposure to abuse, negative alternations in cognitions and moods). Molly: - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (witnessing the abuse). 6. What would you do to assist the client? (Treatment approaches and relevant treatment strategies) – Social Worker to complete a biopsychosocial assessment and address the following challenges: Mr. Morgan: Refer to Primary Care Physician because of excessive drinking can leads to health-related issues such as cirrhosis of the liver; refer to substance
abuse/addiction counselor for SA assessment; refer to AA self-help groups; refer to anger management (anger manager and coping skills), and refer to parenting skills classes (develop parenting skills). Mrs. Morgan: - Refer to individual/group therapy (abuse she experienced) and refer to parenting skills classes (develop parenting skills). Emma: Refer to individual counseling/therapy (witnessed abuse and to express feelings on being removed from parent’s home) and refer to group therapy (age appropriate) - to help her interact with peers her age. Ryan: Refer to individual/group therapy (learn coping skills and address the emotional stress of being removed from family, addressing the physical abuse: and refer anger management (anger management and self control skills are needed). Molly: Refer to play therapy (client can express her feelings for being removed from her parents and witnessing abuse in the household). 7. How would you examine the clients’ environment and the need for indirect services? The clients’ environment shows that they have a place to live – in-home assessment and evaluation to be completed to address immediate needs. I would refer the family to DCFS/SNAP, area food bank and pantry to address the need for food. Molly would be placed in free daycare and attend local park for play dates with other kids. 8. Are their relevant policies or community issues that might impact your case i.e., immigration, health care? The location of the placement of the children Molly and Emma and the shelter where Ryan is being placed is close to their parents so reunification of the family is a possibility. Assessment of neighborhood, community, etc. – is it safe? Child Protect Agency/CYS – permanency plan (agency policies)? 9. Are there any ethical dilemmas present? Can you imagine any for your selected case? There may be several ethical dilemmas for example, the social worker speaking with Mrs. Morgan regarding domestic abuse and assisting with getting her to a safe place may cause an ethical dilemma – must be careful and not disclose pertinent information to others. The parents wanting to know what statements the children are making regarding them and their feelings. 10. How would you evaluate your intervention? I would evaluate my intervention by being in constant contact with all my clients and following up on their progress of the treatment plans, interventions, and their overall progress. For example, how Mr. Morgan is doing in his anger management classes and AA meetings; Mrs. Morgan engagement in her parenting classes; or how the children are coping in counseling, therapy and their new environments.
