PSYC 201, LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT NAME: Hannah Shreve INSTRUCTOR: JACKSON REFLECTIONS ON THE NEO (NEUROTICISM, EXTRAVERSION, OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE, ETC)… (15 points available) Work on your own to answer the following questions about your experiences taking the personality test on bigfive-test.com. 1) How did the results of this test compare with what you know about yourself? With the “Big Five Test” my results somewhat surprised me but at the time were kind of expected I know that I get very anxious, and I have depression so as expected those numbers were higher however, I was surprised to see how high my vulnerability score because I have never necessarily seen myself as a vulnerable person. 2) Were you surprised to see the results or was this what you were expecting? As I stated above most of the results were not surprising however the vulnerability did surprise me since I’m not usually very open with people. 3) While you were answering the questions, were you able to identify some of the 5 dimensions of personality the questions were assessing? Provide some examples. while I was answering the questions, I could definitely identify some of the 5 dimensions of personality that the questions were assessing. For instance, some questions asked about my willingness to try new things, which seemed to be related to the dimension of openness. There were also questions about being organized and responsible, which I think were assessing conscientiousness. And there were questions about enjoying social interactions and being outgoing, which seemed to be linked to extraversion. These were just a few examples, but it was interesting to see how the questions related to different aspects of personality. 4) Several of the questions in the test seem almost the same. Why would the creators of the test ask the same question with different wording multiple times? The creators of the test often ask similar questions with different wording to ensure the reliability and validity of the results. By asking similar questions in different ways, they can check if your responses are consistent and if you have a stable personality trait. It helps to minimize any potential biases or inconsistencies in your answers. So even though it may seem repetitive, it's all part of making sure the test accurately captures your personality traits. 5) How might a test like this be flawed and not reflect the actual dimensions of your personality? One potential flaw is that they rely on self-reporting, which means the accuracy of the results depends on how honestly and accurately you answer the questions. Sometimes, people may unintentionally provide biased or inaccurate responses. Additionally, the questions themselves
may not capture the full complexity of someone's personality, as they can't account for every nuance and aspect of who we are as individuals. So, while these tests can provide insights, it's always good to take the results with a grain of salt and consider them as just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to understanding ourselves.
