Social Studies: Explore the Standards Learning Plan Slide Learning 4 How do you plan to help your future students become critical thinkers and civic-minded individuals? I plan to help my students become critical thinkers by having them analyze situations, and use open-ended questions to promote deeper thinking. What could be some barriers you might encounter in these efforts? Language barriers could be an issue here, lower students need more scaffolds or differentiation as well. We will have a variety of needs to meet and that could be tricky. 5 After viewing the video, how do you think social studies instruction can positively impact the world described in this video? Social instruction can have a positive impact because students can grow from social interactions and learn from peers. I think it impacts the world because the world is constantly changing and evolving not just with us as humans but also with the technology around us, money, life, needs, and wants. Things are changing, and they change quicker than many people can realize. Social aspects play a huge part, especially if you look at it from a social media standpoint. 8 What are the four dimensions of the C3 Framework? 1. Developing questions and planning inquiries 2. Applying disciplinary concepts and tools 3. Evaluating sources and using evidence 4. Communicating conclusions and taking informed action. How can this framework (inquiry) support civic-minded preparedness for your future students? It can support civic-minded preparedness for students by promoting inquiry in and out of the classroom. By allowing students to have hands-on experiences and form open-minded questions is a way we can allow students to be more prepared for this. They have access to diverse audiences, experiences, and inquiries in different situations. 11 Which grade-level themes would you like to teach? Communities and cultures Immigration and migration Rights and responsibilities
What might be a unit that you could teach at that grade level that aligns with the theme? For immigration and migration you could use the primary osurces from a goldie kit to discuss the immigration and how people migrated to Iowa. I could have students recognize interactions between individuals and groups and align it to migration. 15 Discuss the implications of the continuum for you? To me – I would try my best to complete as many on the right side so that students had access to learning in collaborative ways and so they can learn from their peers and research as they are involved in student-led and hands-on instruction and learning. Posing questions that are open ended and thought provoking for all students is also very important too. 16 What are your next steps as an individual? My next steps as an individual are to analyze the strategies I have in my tool box and how I will best use them to assist my students. Looking at the vision of the school, the mission of the school and how they prioritize social studies in their school and see how I can do so in my own classroom. Any additional comments or insights: This pear deck was very interesting and engaging! Revised From: Keystone AEA (Ed.). (n.d.). Social Studies: Explore the Standards Learning Plan [Document].
