ITL 604 Reflection The field experience portion of this course focused on getting to your students to support all students through research, reflection, and collaboration. Now, take a moment to reflect on this process and how it benefits students. Use your Collaborative Meeting notes as you reflect. You will submit this assignment in Week 3, Assignment 3C. Complete this reflection template with your partner but each of you will submit your own copy. How did the information in the SimSchool Observation report help you better understand your students, the class, or the school context? Being that I have not had the opportunity to lead my own class, the stimulation was a new, wonderful experience. At first, I was overwhelmed by the amount of students asking questions or needing help. I was thinking there was no way I would be able to get to know everyone, much less on a personal level. However, after some practice, I was able to develop a better understanding of the flow of directing students in the classroom. It also taught me how each child had a different profile and how I should expect that especially when creating IEPs. It also taught me to prepare as most as possible by reading up on any information given on the students. What did you learn from the Collaborative Meeting process (after discussing your experiences using SimSchool)? It was insightful to collaborate using simschool. Even if it was something small such as experiencing tech problems to bigger feelings of being overwhelmed by the students having different needs, I felt reassured that not everything may flow how we expect it but it’s important to take a moment to gather myself. I enjoyed getting Cynthia’s perspective such as taking notes on each student, apart from the already provided notes. This helps the information be more hands-on and feel easier for me to identify among the students. How would you use the Collaborative Meeting process when you become a credentialed educator? I would use the Collaborative Meeting process in the same way. I would want to first complete the observation on my own so that I can justify my own observations. By first completing an observation alone, I feel our conclusions will be more accurate as I will be able to support or defend my findings and vice versa with another educator. In order to improve, I will be focusing on my preparation whether that be with documentation, coordinating meetings, or passing of information.
How did the collaboration make you feel? I feel excited to be able to collaborate with others. I feel it is actually necessary to minimize any possible errors in the personal education plan creation process. By collaborating I will get used to the IEP creation process and get used to collaborating as I will have to with parents and other personnel as well. Collaborating is important because people are complex and others bring a perspective we may have missed. What do you want to know more about (in SimSchool, your role as a gen. ed. Teacher, or your role as a Special Ed. Teacher)? I want to know more about how to regulate my responses. During the SimSchool, I was afraid I would not be able to answer the questions from all the hands that were raised at one time. I would also like to practice with a higher quantity of students in case I ever get a class of that size. I would want to experience this again with the option of adjusting the classroom size. In addition, possibly collaborating with other personnel via simschool.
