Moore 1 Dwaynna Moore Reflection for April 5, 2018 Dr. Allen SW 686 Trust the Process: A Work in Progress As I reflect on my journey as a developing social worker, I would like to relate my process and journey to the video that I was assigned to watch for class which is entitled, I Am Man. Throughout my reflection, I will provide my thoughts and feelings in regards to my journey as a developing social worker and I will reflect on certain parts within the video that enlightened this awareness in regards to myself and my overall journey. I would like to acknowledge within my reflection the importance of being aware of where I came from and how that impacted who I am today, I would like to acknowledge the power of change and how it is important to change our mindset in order to impact ourselves and others, and lastly, I would like to acknowledge how many loses can lead to a beautiful win at the end of any journey. I entitled this reflection as trust the process because as a developing social worker I had to somewhere in my journey trust my process of growth and development and welcome disequilibrium even when I did not understand it. As I am able to reflect on the overall process that I am going through as a human being and a future social worker, I will be mindful that the social work profession is full of lifelong learning and even after this season of my journey ends, I must be open and willing to embrace a new journey. At the start of the video, I was able to really focus on the historical context that was provided in regard to the I AM A MAN riot in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1968, there were 1,300 sanction workers in Memphis, Tennessee that took the risk of risking everything for equality in the workforce. There were many historical civil rights leaders that called for a plan to action in regard to this particular riot and they drew the attention of many political officials in a positive and negative way. At the beginning of this riot, the workers felt that the riot was stagnant, which
Moore 2 Dwaynna Moore Reflection for April 5, 2018 Dr. Allen SW 686 means showing no activity or movement. The march and riot seemed to be very insignificant and ineffective. In relation to the historical context of the video and the history of my journey as a developing social worker, at the beginning of my social work journey in the master’s program I to felt ineffective and insignificant. I was unable to see the light at the end of my tunnel. I struggled with transitioning my way of thinking from a bachelor’s student to a master’s student. I also struggled with finding a balance between school and work. During that time frame, I can remember wanting to give up. I can also remember encouraging myself and reminding myself that this journey was not about me but the lives that I wanted to positively impact in the future. Therefore, something within me kept me motivated and pushed me to strive for greater. In regard to the historical context of racism and economic injustice, I believe that the historians that paved the way for me somewhere in their journey felt the same way, but it was the curiosity and the impact that they wanted to have on the lives of others that kept them going. I had to endure many of loses at the beginning of my social work journey in order to shift my mindset to another level. I am a strong believer that we all win some battles and we lose some battles, but we have to have the drive within ourselves to fight another day regardless of the outcome. From the first semester up until my last semester, I decided to fight the good fight, cease each moment, and endure until the end. I decided to take every lost, capitalize them, and turn me loses into wins. I decided to go outside of what I was familiar with and embark on unknown journeys. As I continued to watch the I AM MAN video, I began to see the shift in the mindset of those individuals who were involved in the sanction workers strike. I began to see African American men utilize their resources by incorporating Martin Luther King Jr into the march, I
Moore 3 Dwaynna Moore Reflection for April 5, 2018 Dr. Allen SW 686 began to see them utilize the knowledge and skills that were embedded deep inside of them that they were unaware of, and lastly, I began to see them move from violence to peace. As I reflect on my journey as a developing social worker from my first semester up until midway throughout the graduate program, I am able to identify with the shift that took place within my mind. In order for me to survive in the graduate program at the University of Mississippi, I had to change my mindset from being codependent and independent. I had to utilize the feedback and resources given to me and also partner those resources with outside sources. I had to dig deep within and change my viewpoints and my approach. I had to do this not to please my instructors, but for my growth, development, and well-being. In life, many of us stunt our growth because we stay stagnant within our mind. I throughout my process as a developing social worker learned to turn my failures into successes. I simply learned to look at me loses and lessons and I realized that my most epic failures could bring out the best in me. So, I began to roll with the resistance and embrace my stumbles. It was not my stumbling that mattered but it was my choice to get back up and try again. In the I AM MAN march, the African Americans within the march had taken many lost but they made the decision to greatly impact society by choosing to get back up. For those sacrifices and mindset shifts, African American men have the ability to work in an environment that is economically just. Lastly, in regard to the sanction workers movement and my journey as a developing social worker, I would like to acknowledge how many loses can lead to a beautiful win at the end of any journey. During the I AM MAN march, after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr took over the march and strived to make a change in Memphis, Tennessee, there was an event that happened in the march that caused the march to lose positive momentum and credibility. During the march, a
