Assignment 3: Usability Evaluation
Questionnaire is one of the most popular techniques for gathering data, where questions in a questionnaire are designed to be answered asynchronously, i.e. without the presence of the investigator. A goal must be set, before developing the questionnaire, as developer would like to have relevant reasons before starting working on something. Targeting the participants is another important element of collecting data through online questionnaire. In many ways questionnaire is similar to interviews as questions could be open or closed. Since interviewer is not present or in a word nobody is available to interpret the questions for the participant, making the

For example when a participant is asked about to enter his/her date of birth, a pop up message could tell them what date format needs to be used. Data validation could easily be implemented in web-based questionnaire, which will warn the user about invalid data and tell them what is expected. At the same time this would help the researchers from not having invalid data when analyzing in the lab. For example, when asked a teacher "what year the school was established?", the answer has to be a four digit number less than or equal to current year and will not accept text as input. By writing a validation rule in the back end, this could be accomplished (max char size = 4 and reg. expression (/d) which will only accept 4 digit number). Skip logic is another simple aspect of web-based questionnaire and it must be implemented when creating and designing a interactive questionnaire. If a respondent answer a question 'Yes' or 'No', designer can store '1' or '2' in back-end for comparison purpose. Based on the comparison result, a question or a series of questions can be skipped. For example, if a respondent answers 'No' when asked if he/she likes to use iPad, rest of the iPad features related questions can be skipped. Skip logic can be helpful targeting a age range as well. Another easy aspect of creating and conducting an online questionnaire is faster response rate and automatic transfer of responses
Questionnaires are “a series of questions asked to individuals to obtain statistically useful information about a given topic” (Bryant, L, 2014). There are different types of questionnaires that include face to face, phone, post and online.
P1 – Summarise accurately the principles of interactive media authoring with some appropriate use of subject terminology.
A questionnaire is a list of a research or survey questions asked to respondents, and designed to extract quantitative date. Questionnaires are easily distributed to the community and can be completed and collected on the spot or be emailed or posted back to the researcher. Self completed questionnaires are the most common survey as they are cheap and can be passed to a lot of people. Some sociologists tend not to use questionnaires because of their low response rate and lack of validity. Also, some people may give false information so some researchers like to stick to interviews and experiments for increased accuracy. I will explore why sociologists shy away from using questionnaires.
A questionnaire is research which involves a number of different questions to gather information from the people who are filling it in. Questionnaires are designed as a way to find out what people are thinking. An advantage of questionnaires is that it is very practical because it is quick to collect information from the people filling out the questionnaire. Another advantage of questionnaires is that the same questions is asked to everyone filling the questionnaire out so easy to sum up. The final advantage to questionnaires is that large information can be collected. There are also some disadvantages to questionnaires which is that there is no way of telling how much though someone who is filling the questionnaire out has put it. Another disadvantage is that the person filling it out may forget what has happened to fill it out so it won’t be reliable. The final disadvantage to questionnaires is that there is no way to tell how truthful a respondent is being.
Face-to-face interviews will be interview guide approach where there will be an outline of topics and issues that the interviewer will cover with the participant (Babbie &Rubin, 1993). Having an outline it allows the researcher to compare responses between participants and it reduces the interviewer biases (Babbie & Rubin, 1993). An outline is constructed where it will guide the researcher with the participant from one concern to another but in a conversational approach (Babbie & Rubin, 1993). Moreover, a study without any set structure the researcher and participant can get side tracked and not answer the questions needed for the study research. The length of the interview will be approximately thirty minutes, but there will be no time restriction. The information will be recorded similar to a focus group, with a recording device and notes occasionally. Before analyzing the data, the researcher will examine his or her “own thoughts and feelings” because it’s a crucial process in understanding the participants (Babbie & Rubin, 1993, p.
The researcher will assume that the respondents will answer all survey questions and that the questions will be answered honestly. The researcher will assure the respondents that the survey will be handled anonymously and that it will be confidential.
To assess the goals of these users, they were told to complete an online simple questionnaire, which will help with finalize the
The pilot study conducted in this research shows that there were a few problems within the overall design of the interview and therefore the researchers decided to make some minor changes to their design, these changes included altering the questions so they were open ended, they also made the interview less structured in able to gain more focused answers in which they could analyse.
“Problems researched with the use of appropriate methods greatly enhance the value of the research.” (Sekaran, 2003) Data can be collected through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and through other techniques, like projective tests. In even more detail, interviews can be conducted in a variety of different ways such as over the phone, through the computer, interviews through the electronic media, and face-to-face. Questionnaires can be conducted personally or administered electronically. “Interviewing, administering questionnaires, and observing people and phenomena are the three main data collection methods in survey research.” (Sekaran, 2003) As stated before, data can be collected in many different ways; however the value of the research is only greatly enhanced when personal opinions and bias is left out of the collection of data.
For me, I do not have enough knowledge about this project and there are so many topics that I do not have an enough in depth knowledge. And I am serious about the part of doing a questionnaire survey.
According to www.uc.ie/resources (025/02/08) ‘‘argued that questionnaires give the researcher feedback from the point of view of the user’’.
The strength of questionnaires is it can give an insight into respondent’s thoughts and opinions and also cost efficient as it is inexpensive.
The online survey is easy to use for respondents when compare to other method like interview as people can access internet to answer survey, complete the survey in a short time. Increase in internet use communication can benefit the research, online survey research was a time-consuming task, different participants can do the survey at the same time and it is convenience and easy to reach people.
In survey method research, participants answer questions administered through interviews or questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers describe the responses given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important that the questions are constructed properly. Questions should be written so they are clear and easy to comprehend.
