From the time a child is born, he is taught how to eat, walk, and talk. Soon after this, he is sent to elementary, middle, and high schools, and college. Everyone's life is centered around learning and gaining knowledge. Since being able to effectively gain and apply knowledge is one of the most important aspects of life, finding an effective teaching style that engages and helps me to develop critical thinking skills is imperative to the development of my future. Every teacher with classroom teaching experience will agree his or her style of teaching is unique. "Traditional teaching styles have evolved with the arrival of alternative methods, prompting teachers to adjust their styles toward students' learning needs" (Gill). Comparing three alternative teaching styles and their effect on my learning allows me to determine which one helps me learn the most. The most traditional form of teaching in higher level institutes is the authority or lecture style (Quinonez). Students learn through lectures and direct instruction; the focus is mainly on

A teachers' role in this approach is to pass on the knowledge and information needed to their students (Frunză). Pupils are expected to take notes or absorb information (Gill). From my own experiences, this style of teaching is appropriate for higher lever learning. It is especially suitable for subjects like history that rely on the memorization of key facts, names, and dates (Gill). However, in other subjects such as mathematics or English, this method of teaching did not resonate well with my learning style because there was little or no interaction with the teacher. Because the authority model is teacher-centered it frequently entails lengthy lecture sessions or one-way presentations which are helpful during certain college
Throughout my high school and early college career, the concept of a learning style is far from foreign. I have learned of the three main learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I have taken multiple tests and found out what my learning style is and that it has not changed much throughout my educational career. Earlier in this course, I learned that I need to adapt the way the teacher is teaching to the learning style that best suits me. My learning style is mainly visual and kinesthetic. However, the questionnaire created by Barbara Soloman and Richard Felder has given me a lot more insight to my learning style. I have learned more about my learning style such as what type of learner I am, how I learn best, my preferred way to
For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.
The approach argues that the person giving the information, the person receives the information and the type of information received is extremely important in retaining that information (Crowley & Hoyer, 1994). For example a student would be far more likely to learn from a person who has authority over them, so a teacher would be able to communicate information more easily to the student if they are perceived as having a higher authority than them (Petty, Wegener & Fabrigar,
In order to effectively teach students with different learning styles, I will most likely be using this website for ideas. Education.com has everything. They tell you how to know what styles your children are better with and give you some activities that you can use to reach all of those students. On their site, you can find specific activities for any grade, or subject, up through high school. For example, I will be teaching third grade so I would go and look under third grade and then go under whatever subject I need, such as math. Once there, I just scroll through and pick an activity that allows student to interact with each other while practicing the subject and having fun. I can also use
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
We tend to teach as we were taught or we adopt the teaching methodology of the
At the beginning of the semester in Education 2110, all of the students in Mrs. Ross’ class were required to take a learning style assessment. This is an assessment that is essential for future teachers to take so that they are able to identify not only how they learn, but also how they will most likely teach. After the students identified what their learning style was, Mrs. Ross suggested that the student’s personal learning style could help determine whether they should go into primary or secondary education. While many of the students already knew what their learning style was, some were just finding out for the first time.
Also education system has is the norm to use similar styles of teaching. In my opinion the main focus of education should be challenging the students with Divergent thinking which according to the University of Washington is " is to generate many different ideas about a topic in a short period of time It involves breaking a topic down into its various component parts in order to gain insight about the various aspects of the topic. Divergent thinking typically occurs in a spontaneous, free-flowing manner, such that the ideas are generated in a random, unorganized fashion. Lack of motivation in schools lead to poor
Everyday, teachers are faced with the challenge of teaching students new information that is valuable to their future. Teachers are responsible to determine what and how information is taught. How this information is taught to students is pertinent to their success; therefore, teachers must be able to use effective teaching methods in the classroom. Students have diverse learning styles; therefore, teachers need to determine how students learn best and pattern their teaching to accommodate these differences. During elementary school, children learn to read and write, acquire a basic understanding of content areas, and develop dispositions toward
Earlier on it was discussed that a study conducted revealed that out of 134 students, 19.4 percent did not want change to occur to the teaching styles (Sagan 220). The other 80.6 percent of the students had been shown another questionnaire to determine the changes needed to be done so that the teaching styles would suit the students’ way of learning. In the results, it was determined that the traditional classroom setting, where the teacher would lecture the students on the lesson, was deemed as unsuitable and the students would prefer more activities that would enable them to learn visually and kinesthetically (Sagan 220). This fact refutes the counterargument because it shows that multiple educators tend to look toward the traditional method which is highly unpopular among students. That is to say, students prefer more interactive lessons because each student is unique and learn a different style. It is also evident that people learn more and also better if they are actively involved in the lesson.
Teaching Physical Education today is more intricate than most people might think it is or was years ago. Classrooms today include students of a very large spectrum. This can include students who learn visually, auditory, by being hands on or even students who participate in adaptive classrooms. Basically, every student in any classroom seems to learn slightly differently than their classmate these days. Too many teachers are avoiding including multiple teaching styles in their classrooms due to the potential increase in effort and preparation that follows, but it is crucial that Physical Educators are aware of the importance of teaching styles in the classroom. A teacher who can properly incorporate multiple teaching styles into their classrooms is an example of a successful and effective teacher.
Every teacher has a different method of teaching. The teachers that I have had in my school career have been no exception. In this way, each teacher has set an example for me, as a future teacher, to follow or not to follow as I see fit. With the examples from my teachers and in continuing my education, I am developing my own method of teaching. I plan to use a combination of teaching methods in my own classroom. My method will be an eclectic approach because I will be using components of more than one philosophy. I will be using essentialism, behaviorism, progressivism, and existentialism.
In fact, I realized, as I continued to read, my teachers did a lot of modeling and demonstrations on completing a task. In addition, they had the ability to adjust learning to their students learning need and style, even though learning styles were not part of the system yet (Hamond et al., n.d.). Therefore, much of my teaching mimics how I learned from those teachers. I believe in guiding my students toward discovery on their own; therefore, my lessons were thought out, so they encompassed each student’s learning style. I taught 6th-grade social studies, not an exhilarating course to garner excitement.
Each teacher is different no matter what the course subject is. When I find myself in a new class with a new professor I seem to notice the little details that make up the teaching style of the instructor. In total I have four classes all of which are part of Chattahoochee technical College. Two of those classes take place at the Paulding Campus and the other two take place at the North Metro campus. I take my American Government class at the North Metro Campus every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Every Monday and Wednesday I go to the Paulding Campus to take College Algebra. These two professors differ in more ways than just the subject of their course.
