I became a part of the EOF because I like to study and work hard in the summer. This program is helpful because college is different than high school and in college I have to work harder and do all my best to pass the summer program with a good grade. This program will help us to do well in the fall semester and they support us with many things such as tutoring, academic skills workshops. The reason that I applied for the EOF is to get to know the college that I will go to and at the end of the program if I passed I will get college credits and that’s one of the things that I am looking forward to. The EOF is designed strengthen my preparation for college level and academic success.
The first two chapters of “What the Best College Students Do” cover several topics. Throughout the chapters, the lives and experiences of different college students are explored. A reoccurring theme in the book is the concept of learning styles. Essentially, the three learning styles are memorization, comprehension, and strategy. According to the author, comprehension is the most effective style of learning. While everyone will possess one of these three learning styles, it is not impossible for someone to adjust to another style. Additionally, the author elaborates on academic ideas such as independence, grades, and outside influences.
Education plays an important role in every person’s future. Not only does it enhance a person’s intellect, but it allows them to discover what they want to become. For the past years, high school students were having trouble graduating and when Texas ranked the lowest in the population that received a high school diploma, the state decided to minimize the amount of exams students had to pass. Although Texas students became successful in graduating, this way of graduating harms the student because they were unable to understand the basics in their education. The reduction of End-of-course exams from fifteen to five and later to three motivate students, but also teaches them that they don’t need to work hard.
A non-standardized curriculum allows students to focus on higher level thinking skills. Students are encouraged to learn from each other. Students are encouraged to challenge each other. Teacher’s use Bloom’s Taxonomy to have student think deeper into concepts. Instead of students learning ten concepts over the course of a year, students learn six that are more in depth. Students use a variety of alternative assessments to show their depth of knowledge. A student can choose how to display their knowledge. Students may give a presentation, create a 3-D model, design a PowerPoint, or write a story or a variety of other ways to present their ideas.
As generations pass, and students change and develop, teachers and administrators propose new techniques to help students improve. From the introduction of school, to the division of age groups, to standardized testing, someone always has a new way to help students in school. A new idea, however, may be the key to success. A school in Massachusetts has developed a new program that challenges students with college level classes while still in high school. As students improve in school, to prevent boredom in the classroom, they need a challenge, this challenge being harder level, college courses. While still in the comfort of high school, students experience the rigor of college classes, this helping ease the transition into higher education
During my high school years, I can confidently say I have excelled in my academic endeavours. This success is partially due to my desire to learn. I am always intrigued by the lessons and concepts that are at the core of assigned work. My passion for learning has facilitated my learning process; because I am usually interested in the material that is being taught, my ability to retain and understand information is heightened. My academic success is also due to my drive to do the best I can. Since grade nine, I have demanded excellence from myself in all academic subjects. I strived to perform to the best of my abilities in the first high school years so that I would adopt that habit early and take it with me through the senior high school years. Finally, my academic excellence

The following evidence is a grade 9 Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute Scholar Certificate and it is given to those students who have obtained an average of 90% or higher upon completion of the 2016-2017 school year at Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute. I included this item of evidence because it demonstrates my learning skills by displaying an overall idea of how I efficiently learn and apply those skills in different courses throughout grade 9. My learning skills allow me to quickly adapt and quickly getting up-to-speed with any task I’m confronted with. This not only includes new math theorems, science concepts, and different languages, but also quickly adapting to new tools and techniques I haven’t encountered before. This
i-Ready seems to be a great technology that monitors students’ progress. I like that this diagnostic test provides a deep evaluation for every students and customizes each test to track the student’s growth and performance. i-Ready also keeps track of the students entire K-12 educational career, which is great because it accurately demonstrates the student’s progress in reading and mathematics from when they start school to when they complete high school. Educators can see exactly what level their student is on before they graduate and enter college. Not only does this tool show what each student need assistance in. The program also identify why the student is struggling and what can be done to fix the problem.

This course was extremely interesting to me; discovering the four different learning patterns, how they influence college coursework and my career path. I appreciated looking at the inter-working of how I learn and what I can do to enhance my learning capabilities. As the weeks went by, the on-line experience with Ashford University became easier to schedule; I used sequential and precision learning patterns to regulate my time, turning in assignments when they were due. In the past, on-line learning was tedious and difficult to manage. Ashford’s approach with an
