Mammalian Kidney Investigation
Background Information:
The kidneys are dark red bean -shaped organs that are a very important pair of organs that perform many functions. The kidneys have a convex side and a concave side. They are each about the size of a fist. The kidneys are located near the middle back of a human, just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. One kidney is located below the spleen on the left side of the body, whereas the other kidney is located just below the liver. The kidneys receive blood from the paired renal arteries and the blood is drained into the paired renal veins. In a human body, the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water everyday.

Qualitative data- Analysis of the kidney
The size of the sheep’s kidney was around the size of a fist and the ureter was still attached to the concave side of the kidney. Diagram 1 is the exterior of the kidney. The outside of the kidney was dark red in colour. The renal artery carries the blood into the kidney and the renal vein carries the blood away from the kidney.

The functions of the renal system, which are performed by the kidneys, are to regulate and maintain the balance of electrolytes and the pH of the fluid that has been processed. It assists in the production of new red blood cells and it also involved in the maintenance of blood pressure.

This puts blood under high pressure in the glomerulus; thus it forces tiny molecules and liquid out of the capillary and into the Bowman’s capsule. Soon afterwards, the tiny and liquid molecules cross the epithelium of the Bowman’s capsule, the basement membrane and capillary wall in order to get into the Bowman’s capsule and to arrive in the nephron tubules. The consequence of this is that the filtrate (the tiny and liquid molecules) pass along the remainder of the nephron and helpful substances are reabsorbed along the route. Last of all, “the filtrate flows through the collecting duct and passes out of the kidney along the ureter” as mentioned by (Parson’s, R: p128).

There is a pair of kidneys in the human body. They are situated towards the back of the body under the ribs, just at the level of the waist where one on either side of the body. Each kidney is composed of about one million units which are called nephrons and each nephron consists of two parts: a filter which is called the glomerulus and a tubule leading out from the nephron (Cameron 1999). According to Marshall and Bangert (2008) the kidneys have three major functions. Firstly, the kidneys are excretion of waste from plasma in the blood. The second function is that, they maintain of extracellular fluid volume and composition. Lastly, the kidneys have a role in hormone synthesis.
Treatment with water, caffeine, alcohol, and gatorade and the effects on urine output, pH, Na+ excretion, and solid excretion were tested at 30 minute intervals for 2 hours. It was found that urine production for each treatment group increased after 30 minutes, increased further after 60 minutes, and then began to decrease. Mean increases in urine production were only significant for Gatorade in the first 90 minutes (an increase of 40% at 30-60 minutes, and a decrease of 73% at 60-90 minutes) and for caffeine over 60-90min (a 48% decrease). The average pH for each treatment group became more acidic by 90-120 minutes. Mean differences over each time
