Health care moved into the spotlight on March 23, 2010 with the Affordable Care Act becoming a law that plans to provide insurance to all Americans, reduce the high cost of health care, and continue to maintain the current standard of care. How will health care management organizations be able to accomplish this daunting task? One way for any organization to meet a new requirement is to review their mission, vision, goals, and objectives and readjust or realign as needed. As changes occur in the organization they are clearly delineated to the staff responsible for implementation and as the staff begins to focus on these new and shared goals, teams will form and develop to achieve the new goals. The periodic meeting would change from a group to a team if during the meeting they collaborate and reach a shared goal or task that they are mutually accountable for. From my perspective, this first meeting would be a perfect time to begin to develop a team out of the group of individuals by talking to them, understanding their skills and strengths, highlight how they are all connected to the success of the organization, and reinforcing their shared goals (Goodwin & Griffith, 2009). As this group of individuals move forward and begin to share responsibilities a team will emerge.
Motivation and Teams
Is there anything we chose to do that is not motivated in the hope of gaining something or the fear of a consequence? Another colleague feels that the team could function effectively even if some members lack motivation but the truth is motivation is critical to getting the job done. First lets clear up any confusion on the importance of motivation. Success in any organization depends on reaching your goals and objectives and when team member’s personal goals or values are in alignment with the organizations mission and vision they have a higher level of motivation. The outcome of these higher levels is increased productivity, improvement in the quality of work and financial gains
The levels of motivation within a team can be affected both positively and negatively in a variety of different ways.
The superior act of living an effective life lies in the pursuit of excellent vision, to move from where we are to where we ought to be, either as a person or as an organization. A health care leader must motivate the organizational team, find how to work with the associates to effectively dedicate their time and energy to achieve the identified goals and objectives through the established vision. The team members need to buy into the vision, where they are currently doing what the leader envisions, the leader must encourage them, keep them on track and set standards for the team by setting goals and objective, flowing from the vision. This will enable the leader to move the health care organization to the expected performance level within the set time period. The leader must ensure that individual responsibilities of the associates are identified, motivated and resources provided to achieve the identified goals. To pursue the vision, I will lead the development of the health care organization’s strategic alignment of clear goals and objectives, to preserve the core mission and encourage progress toward the envisioned future state. Also, I will encourage and provide the direction for the organization without hindering the development of the goals that we expect to accomplish.
Centura Health is their region’s largest hospital system that is faith based and not-for-profit, located in Colorado and Western Kansas. This system includes 15 hospitals plus more affiliated hospitals, over 100 physician practices, senior living communities, Flight for Life, Centura Health at Home, and laboratory services (Centura, 2014). The power, size, and large scale of this system causes it to be a god system to analyze during states of change. Currently, there are a lot of changes that are occurring throughout the healthcare system due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act that was signed into law by President Barak Obama. This act has called for a change to increase accessibility to healthcare, reduce the costs that are associated with healthcare, reduce the amount of duplication, and reduce the amount or errors (Herrington, 2010). Centura has created a strategic plan to address these changes and many other changes. Centura Health’s strategic plan is known as the Centura Health 2020 strategic plan. This strategic plan outlines long and short term goals. These goals, as well as previous goal, will be analyzed to understand how they plan on creating the need for change to ensure the successful implementation, as well as, understanding their historical approach to strategic change. Many organizations will look at past successes and failures to understand what went right and wrong to recreate, or avoid, those successes
The American Health Care system needs to be constantly improved to keep up with the demands of America’s health care system. In order for the American Health Care system to improve policies must be constantly reviewed. Congress still plays a powerful role in public policy making (Morone, Litman, & Robins, 2008). A health care policy is put in place to reach a desired health outcome, which may have a meaningful effect on people. People in position of authority advocates for a new policy for the group they have special interest in helping. The Health care system is formed by the health care policy making process (Abood, 2007). There are public, institutional, and business policies related to health care developed by hospitals, accrediting organizations, or managed care organizations (Abood, 2007). Health care spending grew 3.7 percent in 2012 and the traditional way medicine was practiced had to change (Edlin, Goldman & Leive, 2014). The Affordable Care Act and Population Health was designed based on the concept of “The Triple Aim” to foster change in patient care by providing better care for individuals, better health for populations and decrease the cost of health through improved care (Perez, 2014). As a result, population management has moved to the front by linking services, reducing hospital admission, risk stratification, pursing preventive medicine, ensuring medication review and lowering health care cost. Our healthcare system needs major restructuring. Major improvements needs to begin with "all health care organizations, professional groups, and private and public purchasers should adopt as their explicit purpose to continually reduce the burden of illness, injury, and disability, and to improve the health and functioning of the people of the United States", (Crossing the ……, 2001).
Healthcare changes occur rapidly, and it’s a costly venture to constantly pay staff to research trends, and assist with implementation procedures. Organizations such as OAHHS have been developed to help remove that pressure individually, and allow Oregon hospitals to utilize the information that is provided and advocated for at the state level. Hospitals that take advantage of such programs benefit from this growing organization, which continues to hire new staff, are able to tackle specific projects that are of importance to those digesting information to tailor it for specialties.
Health care administration is a very important and crucial role in today’s healthcare system. With an ever-changing national health care system, the role of a Health care Administrator or Healthcare Executive more than ever is needed. Healthcare facilities, organizations, and or offices rely on health care administrators to plan, direct and coordinate all medical health services (United States Department of Labor , 2014). Some areas where one might find administrators are managing entire medical facilities, specialized clinical departments, or a medical practice for a group of physicians (United States Department of Labor , 2014). Teamwork and communication are very important in providing good quality care, especially in the healthcare field. A team is described as a group of people that works together and cooperatively, between each member of the group to reach a common goal (Sullivan, 2013). For a team to function, communication is essential. A report by McKay and Crippen (2008), as stated by Alfaro-LeFevre, (2013) showed that when collaboration is in place, hospitals can decrease their mortality rate by 41%. When mortality rate is lower, hospitals does not only decreased cost, but it also means that patients are receiving good quality care.
