I propose that all unsigned rising artist should target the business side of the music industry to be successful in the entertainment business because it allows the artist to be taken seriously and make solid connections that can further his/her career. Learning the works of the music industry also enables a new artist to be further successful and profitable. Recent studies show that most new artists without professional representation and a business mindset have a slimmer chance in getting signed to major or independent labels (Lowry, 2011). Overall, the specific change needed is that unsigned artists should be concentrating on their careers as professionals and not amateurs, thus focusing on the ins and outs of the music business and
For new bands, one of their first major steps into getting into the business is usually finding a record label. A record label is commonly known by most people as someone who simply signs a band and sells their music. What most people do not know is that they do much more than that. A label does do all the things that people believe they do, however, they also do much more to help an artist. A label is one band’s contact to other artists or promotors that will help further their popularity and reach out to more businesses who could potentially seek endorsement deals to support an artist while also advertising their own product (Lindvall). However, some bands have had negative experiences with labels. There are many negative outlooks on record labels recently and their work with certain artists.
I wanted the same concept for my company, only with artist and songs, and records. I wanted a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door an unknown and come out another a recording artist—a star"An epitome of this dream of Berry Gordy would be the well known all male singing group The Temptations. The lead of this group was the Otis Williams, and he recorded experiences at Motown Records. First the Temptations had to audition at Motown and impress Berry Gordy. Either Gordy loved the artist or he didn’t
Until the late 40s, most country and western artists on a major record label would record in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago as they were where the label offices and studios were located. 1945 saw the first independent recording studio built in Nashville, titled ‘The Castle Recording company’ and was created by a pair of enterprising radio engineers from WSM in Nashville, (Levy 2000, 22-23). In 1954, Nashville Producer Owen Bradley constructed a studio away from downtown in the famed Quonset hut and was soon followed by a rush of producers, publishers and performers in the late 50s to early 60s converting old houses into studios and offices. This central hub of music industry development in downtown Nashville would form what would come to be known as ‘Music Row’ (Hill 2011, 294). This rush of interest would see session musician and producer Chet Atkins persuade label RCA Victor to construct a studio in 1957, later known as “Studio B”. (Studio B, n.d.)

At Jeremy Cays Productions we appreciate that your songs may require extra input from backing singers and session musicians, and we have many at our disposal who can provide your recording with a more professional and balanced feel. Many lead singers, for example, do not make good backing vocalists because it is an entirely different discipline. We are happy to call on our team of musicians to bring their skills to bear and help give your song an extra dimension.

In the years that Motown Records was being established there were many successful Independent labels. For example, Paramount and Gennett Records were widely known and successful. Independent labels started in the 1920’s. Independent labels want that big sound feeling, without the dealing with corporate America. Although, Motown Records started small, founder Berry Gordy Jr. had no intentions of keeping it that way by any means. This essay will briefly explain how Motown grew and the rich history of legendary musicians that helped establish Motown. This essay will also discuss how Motown Records impacted the music industry and how Berry Gordy Jr, and artist such as The Miracles, The Supremes, and Stevie Wonder to name a few create a sustainable
First, the company will have to study the current state of the music industry and the economy as well. A struggling economy will bring record sales down, because people are budgeting their income a lot tighter and music will not be among one of the items they need to purchase. If people do not have enough money to purchase the music, chances are they will find other ways to get the audio through illegal links or burning compact discs. A struggling music industry can be caused by a bad economy, but another key factor is poor music quality. If the music is not good, then chances are the songs will not get purchased. Sales have been on the decline in recent years due to technology advances and lack of artist development is the main problems to this epidemic. The labels have been putting out manufactured music for the past few years and the consumers are unhappy. The next step is for the label to use its assets, such as an artist and labels to attract fans. More than likely, each big label company has a fair share of stars that can generate sales, so these releases need to be timed properly. Thirdly, the strategy must be selected for these stars to succeed. The final step would be for upper management of the record label, to use their highest selling acts to increase profit potential and create new trends. Universal Music Group has to come up with
On Saturday May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo-psychedelia and Paisley Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest D J’s , Eric Slick from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played songs LP's and 45's in between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music business. He is the drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B-Room. The album is a group project and is the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is disappointing to hear that sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good effort. “Folks take our music” we make our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet feel comfortable taking an artist's work. Thanks for coming and adding a little more color to a very musically colorful night.
Mr. Forondo, FAME (Forndo Artist Management Excellence) needs technology support to track the contracts of artists, a proposal for contracts to new artists, calendars of artist schedules and the performance shows, etc. In any event, music manager today have to be informed about a lot more things than they used to in the past including music
‘Independent record labels have been around since music started being recorded’ (King, 2012, p.13). Created by fanatics with a passion for music, the recording and production process was often self-funded and the purpose was to nurture talent and creativity. Most of the major record companies we know today would have once started in this manner (King, 2012).
The popular music industry in the late 1990s was dominated by a small number of integrated corporations with headquarters in Europe, the United States and Japan. This music market starts simply with an artist and moves along through many steps to the consumer. Everything has its start when a musician presents his music to a music manager, and if he/she finds the music promising, a contract is signed between the two, recordings are made and a marketing plan is drafted for the

Establishing the target market is the focus of the case. There are different avenues they can venture down. The key is to figure out which will be generate sales more quickly and prove to be the most beneficial to the company. Polyphonic’s options are to market to the record labels, producers, or the unsigned artists.
