It was on September 21, 1972 when President Ferdinand E. Marcos placed the Philippines under Martial Law. The President claimed that ‘lawless elements’ supported by a foreign power were plotting to overthrow the lawfully elected government and that martial law was necessary to save the Republic and reform the society (Lim). On the other hand, tourism is defined as the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure business and other purposes (Cruz 1). The term travel and tourism industry has come to mean all the private, public and voluntary sector organizations that provide services for the traveling public and work together to promote the socio-economic benefits of the industry worldwide (Cruz 9). In this industry, companies and government conduct businesses since it became an emerging industry in 1970s. Tourism industry is a rising trade during Marcos time since there is an increase in the number of tourist arrivals starting from 1970 up to 1980. From 242, 811 in 1973, it increased to 1,008,158 in 1980. However, it can also be observed that there was a negative growth rate from 1981 until 1986. The rise of travel and tourism in the Philippines during Martial law were caused by several actions of government. Department of Tourism was built in 1973 and it was in-charge in the marketing and promotions of the country’s destinations to international market. The improvement of
Tourism has taken a toll on many Native Hawaiians and is a huge human rights issue today. Most Hawaiians dislike tourism greatly due to the selfishness and greediness tourists bring to their home country. The pastor at a small rural church on the island of Kauai, Reverend Kaleo Patterson, has witnessed and dealt with numerous Hawaiians who struggle with the issues of tourism. Numerous vacation resorts that attract tourists have taken over gravesites of Hawaiians that have passed away. Due to this problem ancient Hawaiians have to partake in reburials. Tourism causes destruction to coral reefs and rivers because of mindless pollution. Reverend Patterson has protested and given public hearings in effort to acknowledge her fury on tourism. Tourism has brought an uncontrollable worldwide business that has no sympathy or thoughtfulness for the original people of Hawaii.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the world's largest industries with a global economic contribution in 2016 alone of over 7.6 trillion U.S. dollars (Facts, 2017). Over the past six decades, tourism has experienced continued expansion and diversification to become one of the largest and fastest-growing economic sectors in the world (http://www.e-unwto.org/doi/pdf/10.18111/9789284418145). With this exponential growth, there is a need to harness this potential to benefit all stakeholders involved, from local communities to global corporations. According to Tourism Research Australia (TRA), tourism in 2016 brought in over fifty-three billion dollars into the Australian economy (***fact sheet in Excel). While this represents over three percent of the total GDP of Australia, it is hard to delineate how much of this revenue is attributed to cultural tours and experiences provided by Indigenous Australians. For Indigenous Australians, this new avenue has potential to create job opportunities as well as revenue, but also may contribute to problems brought into effect by the mandating of professional standards. While latent prospects are present, the ability to balance between cultural preservation and mainstream Australia will prove to be a difficult undertaking.
I have always been interested in my heritage, thus I do my best to indulge myself in the culture of the Philippines. As a result, my pilgrimage will take place in the Philippines, but not just to go and see the sights and enjoy the food, but to find a rainbow Eucalyptus tree, “The tree is the only Eucalyptus species found naturally in the northern hemisphere. And yes, it's also native in the Philippines, but it’s not found solely in that part of the country, but in other islands as well, such as Negros.”(The Rainbow Tree of Bago City)

The Italian tourism business in the modern times is appealing to those internationally and nationally within the country. Before, during, and after the Fascism reign was when the policies that organizations of today were being created and trying to be put in use for the betterment of the economy and industry at the times. The nation’s tourist structures functioned better and helped bring the economy out of their hard times caused by the mistakes of Fascism. Italy had remained a poor country during Fascism, destroying the progress after the First World War and eventually coming out of it after Fascism with the knowledge of the need for international currency in the economy. The economy and the people of Italy all were affected by the need and growth of tourism during the rise and fall of the Fascist regime.
Another aspect of impact of tourism on a country’s economy is that it facilitates the expansion of the market of goods and services. Foreigners come to a country willing to spend money on different goods and services, thus increasing the amounts of sales. This is a great chance for producers and service providers to receive larger profits. This concerns not only hoteliers, tour operators, and souvenir shops owners. Public transportation, retail stores of different kind, restaurants, and cafes benefit from international tourism. Obviously, if these industries are in demand, businesses will be expanding. On the one hand, it means that more money is paid to the budget. On the other hand, profits generated by the owners are spent inside the country, affecting almost all the fields of the

The Travel and Tourism industry is still one of the largest single businesses in world commerce and its importance is widely recognized. The tourism industry is now one of the largest sectors earning foreign exchange. In the face of many benefits, many countries have started assigning due weight age to the tourism industry in their national development agenda. Tourism is an industry that operates on a massively broad scale: it embraces activities ranging from the smallest sea-side hotel; to air-lines, multi-national hotel chains and major international tour operators. Originally, non-traditional industries such as tourism emerged as a solution to strike a balance between ecology and industry
Global tourism accounts for a large fraction of the world’s economy. There are many types of tourism, but the portion of tourism I will focus this paper on a branch of cultural tourism: film tourism. Specifically, how does a country take its portrayal in media into accounting with the ever-growing tourist industry? Travel magazines from CNN have defined film tourism as, “ . . . a concept that connects tourist interest in sites made famous by movies, “ (Cha 2013). Countries have marketed these sights in order to bring in more economic benefits into their respective economy and bring “new” light to their countries. How the entertainment industry portrays a country is usually based off of how a country demonstrates itself to the world.

The tourism sector being a strong contributor is just not a new finding as its contribution has received widespread recognition in the country. (The tourism destination conference for 2010) reveals that the tourism receipt for 2009 was at RM 53.367.7 million, with 23.65 million tourist arrivals, making this industry the second largest income earner for the country in the same year and though these figures are laudable, it is said that the ‘local tourism sector has not been exploited to its potential’ (Y.B. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib, 3rd March 2010). In 2009, Malaysia made it into top 10 most visited countries in the world, and was confidently placed in the 9th position below turkey and Germany. This remark shows that Malaysia’s tourism sector has pulled international recognition and has gained force of attraction that draws the attention of tourists all around the continents of the world to choose Malaysia as their tourism destination.
The Philippines is a tropical country that is rich in one of a kind, stunning, land and sea forms alike, so it is no surprise that the official slogan of the Department Of Tourism, or DOT, is “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”. Tourism plays a major role in our economy, making up a whopping 8.6% of the total gross domestic product (TGDP) in 2016 alone. Now incase 8.6% does not seem impressive enough to you, that actually translates to Php 1,243,500,000,000 or 1,243.5 billion Pesos. So basically, tourism is a major player when it comes to sustaining and boosting our economy. But sadly this is one of the many sectors that is greatly affected by something that the Government seems to be in no apparent rush at all to address and fix. The lack of proper waste disposal in the Philippines is an issue of national concern as it jeopardizes the potential growth of the tourism industry of the country, and the preservation of the cultural heritage of our nation, and also takes a toll on the overall health of the Filipino citizens.
