Question
Calculate the amount of heat released when 7.40g of water cools from 49c to 29c
Expert Solution
Step 1

The reactions that release heat into the surroundings and increase the temperature of the surroundings is called exothermic reactions. In the case of exothermic reactions, the products have lesser energy when compared to the reactants. The enthalpy change or H is negative in the case of exothermic reactions. In the case of exothermic reactions involving water, phase changes or chemical changes takes place. When steam condenses and liquid water freezes, heat is given out. In order for the freezing process to continue, heat from the freezing water should be removed continuously. In order to convert liquid water into steam, energy must be added to it and this energy is retained by the gaseous water molecules and when these molecules condense they let out the heat through exothermic reactions and condense into water. In the case of exothermic reactions the entropy (which is a measure of randomness)of the surroundings increases
