their readiness to enter Math instruction in Middle School the following year. The same test is given every year. The principal of
the elementary school is trying to be hopeful, but she is concerned that performance this year was lower than in previous years
due to remote learning. She hires you to set up the data analysis needed to test her hypothesis that the scores were lower than
the average test score of the past 10 years, which is 85. Remote County has Math test scores from 30 of their fifth graders (just
before Easter).
You analyzed the results from the pre-Easter comparisons and found that the average score of the 30 Remote children (M=75)
was significantly lower than the average from the prior 10 years (u-85). This shows that the fifth-grade children in Remote
County who are leaving elementary school after a year of Remote learning did significantly worse on their Math test than the
previous 10-year average.
Independent Samples t: Continuing the story from the previous question, children in Hybrid County have been attending school
in person two days a week, and remotely two other days since January. Fifth graders in this school system take the same Math
test. The principal of the Hybrid school contacts the principal of the elementary school in Remote County and suggests that they
compare the grades of their 5th graders with hers, to see whether the Hybrid approach students performed better than the
Remote approach. Hybrid County also has 30 fifth graders who took the test.
