Lavoisier theory was based on the quantitative measurements. It includes the following series of experiments:
1. Mercury calx was decomposed into mercury and gas when heated. The total mass of mercury calx was equal to the sum of masses of mercury and the gas.
2. Mercury and the gas were combined to form mercury calx again. The total mass remains constant.
3. Mercury was heated in a fixed volume of air to form mercury calx and in this process, four-fifths of the air was left.
4. The burning candle was extinguished when placed in the remaining air.
