Question
Chapter 1, Problem 1.16P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The formal charge on every atom in the methanoate anion shown is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The formal charge on an atom in a molecule or a polyatomic ion is determined from the group number of the atom and its actual valence electrons. The valence electrons are assigned on the basis of electrons shared in a covalent bond and the lone pairs. If an atom bears one or more lone pairs, then both the electrons in each lone pair are assigned to the atom which bears them. In a covalent bond, half of the electrons are assigned to each atom forming the covalent bond.

In the following Lewis structure of [(CH3)2OH]+, every atom, bond and lone pair is positioned. To
complete the structure, drag the formal charge tags to the appropriate atom(s). Each marker may be
used more than once, or not at all. If an atom has a formal charge of zero, do not drag a tag to it.
When you drag the marker in, place the little crosshairs in the upper left corner of the marker
directly over the atom(s) in question (not above them).
