Chapter 1, Problem 24P

Parabolic trough collector. A set of parabolic mirrors can be used to concentrate the sun's rays to heat a fluid flowing in a pipe positioned at the mirrors' focal points (Camacho, 2012). The healed fluid, such as oil. for example, is transported to a pressurized lank to be used to create steam to generate electricity or power an industrial process. Since the solar energy varies with time of day, time of year, cloudiness, humidity, etc., a control system has to be developed in order to maintain the fluid temperature constant. The temperature is mainly controlled by varying the amount of fluid flow through the pipes, but possibly also with a solar tracking mechanism that tills the mirrors at appropriate angles.
Assuming fixed mirror angles, draw the functional block diagram of a system to maintain the fluid temperature a constant. The desired and actual fluid temperature difference is fed to a controller followed by an amplifier and signal conditioning circuit that varies the speed of a fluid circulating pump. Label the blocks and links of your diagram, indicating all the inputs to the system, including external disturbances such as solar variations, cloudiness. humidity, etc

Molten metal at 2000 C is poured using crucible. The liquid metal jet has a diameter of 3 mm with an insulation shield of 5 cm diameter. There is a slit of 30 degrees around the insulation shield. The temperature inside the room is 30 C and the shield is 700 C. Assuming black bodies, find the net heat transfer between jet and shield, jet and room, shield and the room. One of the steps is wrong         A) Resistance network is required to be built       B) To find the view factor between metal and shield , ratio of the angles is used       C) View factors are one of the most important steps to solve the problem       D) None of the above       E) Slit doesnot participate in radiation
A solar water heating system with a planar collector will be built for a site in the province of Gaziantep. The collectors will be mounted in the south direction at an angle of 41 °. In order to be able to install 100 collectors in 4 strings in the area reserved for this work, the distance between strings should be maximum 2.25 m. How many collector lengths should be chosen at most so that the collectors in the rear row can fully receive the sunlight of the rearmost collectors as of 09.00 at sundown on March 1? (Gaziantep; E=37.1°)
A solar panel is mounted on the roof of a house. Fig. 4.1 shows a section through part o solar panel. sunlight trapped air copper pipe, painted black water glass sheet insulating material metal backing sheet, painted black Fig. 4.1 A pump makes water flow through the copper pipes. The water is heated by passing through solar panel. (a) Select and explain three features of the solar panel that maximise the final temperatur the water.
