Critical Thinking:
Do Male Symphony Conductors Really Live Longer?
Several media reports made the interesting observation that male symphony conductors live longer than other males.
John Amaral wrote in Awaken that orchestra conductors “live longer than almost any other group of people by three to seven years.” Robert Levine wrote in Polyphonic.org that they live longer “because they stand up while working.” Some provided other explanations for this phenomenon, often referring to cardiovascular activity. But do male symphony conductors really live longer than other groups of males? The Internet can be researched for possible answers. Let’s also consider the following.
3. Without any disabilities, males qualify for Medicare if they are 65 or older and meet a few other requirements. If we compare life spans of males on Medicare to life spans of males randomly selected from the general population, why would we find that males on Medicare have longer life spans?

- Scientists conducting a study on global climate change want to determine if there has been an increase in the number of days per year that the temperature in El Paso rises above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In 1981, there were 21 days where the temperature rose above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The scientists want to know whether the average number of days per year that the temperature rises above 100 degrees Fahrenheit has increased. Which hypothesis test would be most appropriate for this study? O One mean (sigma known) - one sample z O One mean (sigma unknown) - one sample t O Mean of differences, using dependent samples (paired data) O Difference of two means (independent samples) O Several means (ANOVA) O One proportion O Difference of two proportions O Chi-Squared test for independencearrow_forwardA researcher would like to know if the gestation period of an animal can be used to predict the life expectancy. She collects the following data. Researchers examined the effects of smoking and the ease with which women become pregnant. They took 586 who had planned pregnancies, and asked them how many menstrual cycles it had taken for them to become pregnant after discontinuing contraception. They also sorted the women into whether they were smokers or non-smokers. The data follow. 1 Cycle 2 Cycles 3 + Cycles Total Smokers 29 16 55 100 Nonsmokers 198 107 181 486 Total 227 123 236 586 Does smoking affect the ease with which women become pregnant? - .A new, miracle diabetes drug that diminishes major symptoms of diabetes has been approved by the FDA. Health care professionals and researchers believe that the new drug will prolong lifespan of diabetes patients. If the population is in steady state and the incidence is constant, what will the effect of this new drug be on the prevalence of diabetes in the population? Explain.arrow_forwardA recent study reported that 12% of people toss away about half of what they buy at the grocery store. Assume that this is the true population proportion. You surveyed a random sample of 450 grocery shoppers and found out that 72 of them end up tossing away about half of the groceries they buy at the grocery store.arrow_forwardYou wish to determine the impact expressive writing has on days spent in the hospital for elderly adults. However, it is difficult to estimate the population average of days spent in the hospital. Thus, we recruit 14 elderly adults and randomly assigned half to either write expressively about their most traumatic life event or to write about their plans for that day- both groups write 20-minute essays four days in a row and six months later are asked how many days they have spent in the hospital. Expressive writing condition: 2, 5, 1, 4, 4, 2, 3 Control condition: 8, 8, 5, 2, 7, 5, 7 Which statistical test would you select: Ho: H₁: Enter the data above into and JAMOVI and use the correct statistical procedure to test the null hypothesis - answer the following questions: What is the mean difference between the two samples? What is the standard error of the mean? What is the appropriate 95% CI? [ What is the d-effect size? What is the t-observed? } Based on the p-value (a = .05) should…arrow_forward
- Send Love Greetings company would like to test the hypothesis that the average amount of money spent per person on Valentine's Day increased by more than $10 this year when compared to last year. The following data represents the amount of money that the same eight individuals spent on Valentine's Day during the past two years: Person 3 6. 7. 8. Last $140 $113 $86 $147 $140 $162 $150 $142 Year This $133 $110 $156 $170 $160 $166 $183 $154 Year Defined Population 1 as this year and Population 2 as last year, Use the critical value approach to test this hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance? (Please form the hypothesis test clearly.) • State the Null and Alternative Hypothesis. • Use "Critical value" approach and show the calculations completely. • State the critical value and its degrees of freedom. • State your decision and conclusions explicitly. 5. 4. 2) 1.arrow_forward81% of students say that they do not get enough sleeparrow_forwardAn advertising agency is testing the effectiveness of a new commercial. - Researchers are wondering whether they can predict college GPA with the number of hours studying per week. To test this, they randomly select 8 college students, record their GPA and the number of hours spent studying per week. Do the researchers have enough evidence to claim that the number of hours studying predicts students' GPA? O For every 0.125 points increase in GPA, studying per week increases by 1 hour. O For every additional hour of studying per week, GPA increases by 0.125 points. O The correlation between GPA and the number of hours studying per week is 0.125.
