Back Pain Treatment In a study designed to test the effectiveness of paracetamol (or acetaminophen) as a treatment for lower back pain, 1643 patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) the 547 subjects in the placebo group were given pills containing no medication; (2) 350 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol taken at regular intervals; (3) 546 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol to be taken when needed for pain relief. (See “Efficacy of Paracetamol for Acute Low-Back Pain,” by Williams, et al., Lancet, doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(14)60805-9.) Is this study an experiment or an observational study? Explain.

He asks participants to complete an assessment of interpersonal conflict, with scores ranging from 1 (very low interpersonal conflict) to 50 (very high interpersonal conflict). He collects data from a random sample of 10 participants. The data is as follows: Participant Minutes in Prayer/Meditation Conflict in Relationships 1 3 25 2 30 14 3 0 29 4 23 21 5 5 32 6 16 6 7 0 43 8 18 12 9 7 37 10 27 19 Using SPSS, conduct the appropriate analysis. The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation's 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 39 of 600 randomly selected asthmatics in the country were found to be allergic to sulfites. The authors of a consumer research paper carried out a study to answer this question. They randomly assigned volunteers into one of three groups. The people in the first group were asked to taste a snack that was billed as a new health bar containing high levels of protein, vitamins, and fiber. The people in the second group were asked to taste the same snack but were told it was a tasty chocolate bar with a raspberry center. After tasting the snack, participants were asked to rate their hunger level on a scale from 1 (not at all hungry) to 7 (very hungry). The people in the third group were asked to rate their hunger but were not given a snack. The data in the table are consistent with summary quantities given in the paper (although the sample sizes in the actual study were larger). Find the test statistic and P-value. (Use technology. Round your test statistic to two decimal places and your P-value to three decimal places.)…arrow_forward

The target for quitting smoking was the 8th day of the experiment. In this experiment researchers randomly assigned smokers to treatments. The following is an excerpt from this same study. “ A total of 311 subjects (34.8 percent) discontinued one or both medications. Seventy-nine subjects stopped treatment because of adverse events: 6 in the placebo group (3.8 percent), 16 in the nicotine-patch group (6.6 percent), 29 in the bupropion group (11.9 percent), and 28 in the combined treatment group (11.4 percent). The most common adverse events were insomnia and headache.” Recall that 160 smokers took the placebo and 244 smokers used nicotine patches.
