Chapter 10, Problem 10.30P
Select an appropriate range for a differential pressure transducer to be used with an ASME long radius nozzle with p = 0.5. This system is to be used to measure the flow of 20 °C water through a 20-cm diameter pipe. The operating flow rate expected is between 5,000 cm3/s and 50,000 cm3/s. Estimate the permanent pressure loss associated with this nozzle. As an optional assignment, go to a vendor catalog or website and select an appropriate pressure transducer from its listings that has a 0- to 5-V DC output.

Recommend the low cost flow meter used in industries for measuring flow that provides negligible loss of head in the pipeline. Discuss its construction and working. A venturi tube of throat diameter 10 cm is placed in a pipe of diameter 20 cm. The volumetric flow rate through the venturi tube is 0.02 m3/ sec. [Given: viscosity of water = 10–3 Pas]. Determine the Reynolds number and the upstream to throat differential pressure developed.
On a single plot, show curves that show the relationship between the pressure generated by thepump as a function of flow rate of water at 20 °C through the three branches of the piping systemshown below (delta P on the y axis and flow rate on the x axis; therange of the pressure should be 0 to ~1 MPa).

Calculations involving retention time involve the following formula, T =, where V is
volume and Q is flow rate. Often times, you will be required to calculate the volume of more
than one tank and determine a rate of flow, given a total retention time.
Tank 1
Tank 2
Let's assume that the total retention time for the entire system is 55 minutes, and we want
to know the inlet flow, given the dimensions of tank 1 are : 14m x 10m x 3 m, and tank 2
are: 5m x 10m x 3 m.
Calculate the inlet flow.
