Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The pressure within the arm attached to the ethyl alcohol in an open-end manometer is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
An open-end manometer consists of a U-shaped, poured with mercury and connected to a round bottom container that contains the gas sample. The gradient of pressure occurs because the gas exerts pressure at the open end surface of the mercury while the gas sample exerts different pressure. This pressure gradient can be measured as the difference of the height of the liquid on the two arms of the open-end manometer. Manometer is lowered on the end of the tube that experiences a greater amount of pressure.
