Chapter 10, Problem 10.123SP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Electron dot structure of ozone should be drawn. The symmetric and anti-symmetric stretch modes should be used to determine whether it is greenhouse gas or not.

Concept introduction:

The gases that cannot absorb IR radiation are termed as IR inactive and categorized into greenhouse gases. The two such gases are abundant in atmosphere such as O2 and N2. For a molecule to be IR active, its vibrational modes must exhibit a change in dipole moment. For instant the anti-symmetric mode of CO2 shows a fluctuation in dipole moment and hence is IR active.

Students have asked these similar questions
Carbon dioxide and water are important greenhouse gases. Sketch the fundamental vibrations for both molecules and indicate which you expect to be infrared active.
It requires  190 kJ/mol to break the chemical bond in  Br2 molecules.  a. What is the longest wavelength (in nm) of sunlight that could accomplish this? b. Will  Br2 molecules in the troposphere be fragmented into atoms?
It requires 364 kJ/mol to break the chemical bond in HBr molecules.   1. What is the longest wavelength (in nm) of light that has enough energy to cause this bond to break?   2. Will HBr molecules in the troposphere be fragmented into atoms?
