Chapter 10, Problem 1CSD

DEXAMETHASONE THERAPY AND IQ

On page 439, we presented cognition data obtained by researchers studying the effects of early postnatal dexamethasone therapy for the prevention or treatment of chronic lung disease of prematurity. The study included 146 school-age children of which 72 had been in a dexamethasone group and 74 had been in a control group. As infants, all of the children in both groups had severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) due to insufficiently developed lungs.

To measure cognition, the researchers employed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Third Edition (WISC-III). Use the data in the table to perform the following statistical inferences for each of the three WISC-III main scales and each of the four WISC-III subscales. So, you will need do parts (a)and(b) seven times.

  1. a. At the 5% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that a difference exists between mean scores of school-age children who as (premature) infants receive dexamethasone therapy and those who do not?
  2. b. Determine and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the difference between mean scores of school-age children who as (premature) infants do not receive dexamethasone therapy and those who do.
  3. c. Discuss your results in detail.

A researcher is studying the effects of yoga on depression. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: yoga and medication (experimental group); or support group and medication (control group). In this study, the researcher first administers a questionnaire measuring depression to all participants. Then they implement two programs simultaneously: a 6-week yoga program coupled with medication management and a 6-week support group program coupled with medication management. At the end of the 6 weeks, participants complete another questionnaire measuring depression. Finding the change scores from the beginning to end, the researcher then compares the mean change score of the experimental group with the mean change score of the control group. A) What are the independent and dependent variables in this scenario? B) What statistical test would be most appropriate to use in this study? Why? C) Once you have calculated the statistics, how do you know whether the results of the…
One study of cell phones and the risk of brain cancer looked at a group of 469 people who have brain cancer. The investigators then asked about the use of cell phones. Result: “Our data suggest that the use of hand- held cellular phones is not associated with risk of brain cancer. B . Based on this study, can you determine that cellular use does not CAUSE brain cancer? Why or why not?
Leisure Activities and Dementia. An article appearing in the Los Angeles Times discussed the study “Leisure Activities and the Risk of Dementia in the Elderly” (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 348) by J.Verghese et al. The article in the Times, titled “Crosswords Reduce Risk of Dementia,” contained the following statement: “Elderly people who frequently read, do crossword puzzles, practice a musical instrument or play board games cut their risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia by nearly two-thirds compared with people who seldom do such activities.” Comment on thestatement in quotes, keeping in mind the type of study for which causation can be reasonably inferred.
