Chapter 10, Problem 47IP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The Structure of compound A should be identified.

Concept introduction:

Chiral: Four different atoms attached to a carbon atom is called chiral molecule.

Stereoisomers: Stereoisomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula and they differ only in arrangement of atom in three-dimensional space.

Enantiomers: A compound which is non-superimposable mirror image is called enantiomers.

Diastereomers: A compound which is non-superimposable and non-mirror image is called enantiomers

Racemic mixture: A racemic mixture is simply a mixture containing an equal amount of each enantiomer

Radical Bromination:

Organic Chemistry, Chapter 10, Problem 47IP

2-methyl propane undergoes radical bromination which yields the 2-bromo-2-methylpropane.because bromination will occur where the tertiary radical is present. (Bromination reactions are more selective reaction).

Bromination will occur on tertiary radical than the secondary than primary radical, tertiary radical is more stable radical than the other radicals.

SN2 reaction:

The alcohols is reaction with acids like hydrochloric acid or hydrobromic acid, the bromine atom attacks back side of the carbon atoms which is bearing alcohol group which yield the corresponding inversion product.
